Here's a terrific recipe for icing sugar cookies, no raw egg whites. For any recipes that require egg whites, you can purchase dried, powdered egg whites at cake-decorating supply stores that can be substituted in most recipes calling for the regular raw egg whites, then you can still lick the bowl!

1 ½ cups confectioners' sugar
3 tablespoons butter, softened
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
1 tablespoon milk
3 drops red food coloring
1 (2.25 ounce) jar red decorator sugar

Steps:

  • Combine confectioners' sugar butter, vanilla and milk, beating until creamy. Thin with a few more drops of milk (if necessary) to reach desired spreading consistency. Stir in optional food coloring. Spread frosting over cooled cookies and decorate with colored sugar, if desired.n

½ cup (125 mL) butter, softened (1 stick)
½ cup (125 mL) powdered sugar
¼ tsp (1 mL) vanilla extract
1 cup (250 mL) all-purpose flour
Writing icing or decorating gel (optional)

Steps:

  • * Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C).Add the butter, powdered sugar, and vanilla to the Mixing Bowl. Stir with the Funny Face Kitchen Scraper until well blended. Stir in the flour and mix until a dough forms. You may need to use your hands!Move the dough to a well-floured surface. Roll dough out until it’s ¼” (6 mm) thick (see cook’s tips).Lightly dip the Emoji Cookie Cutters into flour and cut out as many cookies as you can. Use the Nylon Turner to move the cookies onto a cookie sheet. Collect the dough scraps and repeat.* Bake for 10–12 minutes, or until the edges of the cookies are a light golden brown. Remove the cookie sheet from the oven to a cooling rack and cool for 2. Use the turner to move the cookies to a cooling rack.When the cookies are fully cooled, decorate with icing or gel.

Reading below, I see people had difficulty with the icing being too thin when using real egg whites. The 1/2 cup of water is ONLY if you are using POWDERED egg whites. In Martha's older RoyalIcing recipe, the real egg whites are BEATEN into a meringue before adding the sugar. Also, that recipe mentions using a few drops of glycerin for shiny icing.
