Large chocolate cookies shaped like spiders. The kids love them.

Yield 20 cookies

Number Of Ingredients 9

Ingredients

2 (1 ounce) squares unsweetened chocolate
1?¼ cups all-purpose flour
1?½ teaspoons baking powder
¼ teaspoon salt
¼ cup butter
1 cup white sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
40 cinnamon red hot candies

Steps:

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Lightly grease baking sheet.
In a saucepan melt chocolate over low heat. Let cool.
In a small bowl mix flour, baking powder and salt.
In a medium bowl beat margarine on low speed until smooth. Add sugar and beat until creamy. Stir in egg, vanilla and chocolate. Add flour mixture and mix well, forming a stiff dough.
To make spider, shape a 2 inch flat oval for the body. Make the spider's head by flattening a circle about 1/2 inch wide. Shape dough for legs each about 2 inches long and less than 1/4 inch wide.
Attach the head and legs to body. Put two red candies into head for eyes. Bake for 5-8 minutes. Let spiders cool on baking sheet to avoid breaking when moving.

Chocolate-covered cream-filled snack cakes (such as Ring Dings)
Mini chocolate cream-filled snack cakes (such as 100-calorie packs of Hostess chocolate cupcakes)
Black licorice laces
M&M's
Chocolate and vanilla icing

Steps:

Assemble spiders:
Use a toothpick to poke eight holes in cake, insert licorice laces into holes and trim ends to desired length.
Attach M&M's as eyes using dots of icing. Pipe dots of chocolate icing for pupils and create fangs by piping small bits of vanilla icing.

Prepare and bake cake mix according to package directions, using a greased 13x9-in. baking pan. Cool completely in pan on a wire rack. Crumble cake into a large bowl to measure 7 cups., In a large bowl, beat butter, cocoa and vanilla until creamy. Beat in confectioners’ sugar alternately with milk until smooth. Add cake crumbs; mix well. Shape into sixteen 1-1/2-in. balls and sixteen 3/4-in. balls., To assemble spiders, insert a wooden or metal skewer through one small cake ball and then halfway through one large cake ball; repeat with remaining balls. Place on waxed paper-lined baking sheets; insert eight pretzel halves into each large ball to form legs. Freeze 2 hours or until firm., In a microwave, melt chocolate chips and shortening; stir until smooth. Dip each spider in chocolate, allowing excess to drip off. Place on waxed paper-lined baking sheets., Remove skewers and attach M&M's for eyes. Refrigerate until set.
