This fried cheese ball recipe will create bite sized bonanza’s! Fried cheese balls are the perfect amount of crunch, mixed with the perfect amount of gooey! Mix fresh mozzarella with fresh, crunchy breadcrumbs and fry up a memorable starter which is best enjoyed hot.

5 Fresh Mozzarella Pearls
2 Egg
to taste Breadcrumbs
to taste All-Purpose Flour
to taste Salt
to taste Vegetable Oil

Steps:

  • Crack Egg (2) in a mixing bowl.
  • Add a pinch of table Salt (to taste) and beat together using a fork.
  • Drop one of the small balls of Fresh Mozzarella Pearls (5) into the All-Purpose Flour (to taste) and roll it around coating it well.
  • Dip the ball into the egg mix (covering it well) and then drop it into Breadcrumbs (to taste), rolling it around so that the crumbs stick to it.
  • Dip it into the egg mix one more time and coat it with breadcrumbs again.
  • Pour Vegetable Oil (to taste) in a small deep pot or pan and put it on the stove at a medium-high heat. To check if the oil is hot enough get a toothpick and dip the tip of it into the oil. If it starts to bubble around the toothpick, then the oil is hot enough for you to begin frying. If not, wait a little longer.
  • Drop each ball of cheese into the oil and let it fry for 1 minute or until it becomes golden brown in colour.
  • These divine fried cheese balls can be served on a bed of lettuce or on a wooden chopping board mixed with cold meats and cheese. And be sure to serve these up hot so that the cheese oozes out with every bite. Enjoy!

1 (8-ounce) container mini mozzarella cheese balls (bocconcini)
1 cup all-purpose flour
2 eggs, beaten
2 cups panko (Japanese breadcrumbs)
1 tablespoon chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley
1 tablespoon lemon zest
Pinch of red pepper flakes
Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper
1 cup red sauce
2 tablespoons heavy whipping cream
Pinch of red pepper flakes

Steps:

  • For the mozzarella balls: Preheat a deep fryer to 375 degrees F.
  • Drain the mozzarella and pat dry.
  • Add the flour to a casserole dish, the beaten eggs to a second, and whisk together the panko, parsley, lemon zest, red pepper flakes, salt and pepper in the third casserole dish.
  • Dredge the mozzarella through the flour, then the egg, and finally the breadcrumbs. Place in the freezer for 10 minutes then fry in batches in the hot oil until golden and crispy, about 1 minute per batch. Drain on paper towel-lined sheet trays. Season with salt. Serve with the marinara cream sauce.
  • For the sauce: Mix the red sauce, heavy cream and red pepper flakes together in a small bowl and microwave until warm, about 2 minutes. Use for dipping. Yield: 1 cup.
