I found these basic instructions for cooking Bhutanese red rice at Sugat.com. Goes very well with Zesty Corn and Beans.

Number Of Ingredients 3

1 cup red rice
1 tablespoon olive oil
2 cups water

Steps:

  • Rinse red rice in water.
  • Heat oil in a pot, add rice and stir for 2 minutes.
  • Add water and bring to a boil.
  • Lower heat and cover pot. Cook for 45 minutes or until liquid is absorbed.
  • Remove from heat and let rest for 10 minutes.

Like many whole grains, Bhutanese red rice can be cooked in a bigger batch ahead of time. Reheat by steaming or microwaving in a covered dish with a spoonful or two of water.

Number Of Ingredients 5

1¼ cups Bhutanese red rice
Kosher salt
1 medium onion, halved
4 whole cloves
1 small dried chile de árbol, crushed

Steps:

  • In a small saucepan, bring rice, a pinch of salt, and 2 cups water to a boil. Stick cloves into onion halves and add to pot along with chile. Cover, reduce heat to a simmer, and cook until rice is tender, 30–40 minutes. Let stand off heat, covered, 5 minutes. Fluff with a fork before serving.
