If you are a fan of Italian food, Cheese Tortellini is a pasta that you have likely tried and loved before.
So, it makes sense that you might want to try and make it at home. However, if you don’t have a lot of experience in the kitchen, you may not be confident that you know how to cook Cheese Tortellini.
Don’t worry though. If you follow these simple instructions you can prepare a perfect Tortellini dish to enjoy at home and share with your loved ones.
WHAT IS CHEESE TORTELLINI?
Before we talk about how to cook Cheese Tortellini, let’s first make sure that we understand what exactly it is.
Like most Italian dishes, the name is based on a combination of the type of pasta used as well as the main ingredient in the stuffing.
So, in this case, Tortellini refers to the ring-shaped pasta that makes up the dish. Obviously, when stuffed with cheese, the dish becomes Cheese Tortellini. Although the basic way to enjoy Tortellini with a cheese stuffing, you can find it stuffed with meat or vegetables.
Regardless, the way to prepare the dish is the same.
WHAT DO YOU NEED TO COOK CHEESE TORTELLINI?
The dish is actually fairly simple to make. It all starts with preparing the Tortellini. You can do so from a frozen state or from fresh. We will touch base on how to cook frozen Tortellini in the next section, but for now let’s focus on how to do so from fresh pasta here.
It’s fairly simple. All you need is a pot for boiling water, some salt and the Tortellini itself.
Start by filling the pot up about half-way with tap water. Then bring the water to a boil on high heat on your stove. This should take about 10-12 minutes. Make sure to keep an eye on the water as it is boiling to make sure that it doesn’t boil over, causing water to spill out.
Once the water is boiling, add two tablespoons of salt. This helps the pasta cook more evenly and helps ensure that pasta floats to the top of the water, rather than sticking to the bottom of the pot.
Now, it’s time to add the Tortellini to the boiling water.
HOW TO COOK FROZEN TORTELLINI?
Before we continue, let’s take a step back to understand how to cook frozen Tortellini.
The answer is to follow all of the instructions above after successfully defrosting the Tortellini. The best way to do that is to place the frozen Tortellini into a small bowl the night before you are intending to cook it. Then, place the bowl into your refrigerator overnight. Only remove the Tortellini from the refrigerator when you are ready to place it into the boiling water.
If you do not have time to defrost the Tortellini overnight you ca also use your microwave to defrost the Tortellini. Simply place the Tortellini into a bowl, cover it and use the defrost setting on your microwave. How long that will take depends on the make and model of your microwave. Consult the microwave’s owner’s manual for more information.
ADDING THE TORTELLINI TO THE BOILING WATER
Now we are ready to cook the Tortellini.
Using a slotted spoon, gently lower the pasta into the boiling water, taking care to make sure that the Tortellini doesn’t break apart or fall out of the pot. Stir the Tortellini while it is boiling to ensure that the pasta does not stick together.
After 5 minutes, remove one Tortellini from the water and taste it to see if it’s cooked through. It should be, but it it needs more time, stir for another 1-2 minutes.
REMOVE THE TORTELLINI
Having prepared the Tortellini, it is now time to remove it and prepare it for serving. To do this take a slotted spoon and scoop the cooked pasta to a serving dish. If you do not have a slotted spoon, you can use a colander to remove the pasta from the pot.
Your Tortellini is now ready to eat.
Although some people will enjoy eating the pasta on its own, many will want to add a sauce, broth or seasoning that was prepared separately on top of it.
