2 slices bread
2 tablespoons peanut butter
1 slice Cheddar cheese
2 teaspoons butter or margarine

Steps:

  • Heat a skillet over medium heat. Spread peanut butter on one slice of bread, lay a slice of cheese over the peanut butter, and top with the remaining slice of bread. Spread butter on the outer sides of the sandwich, and place in the hot skillet. Fry on each side until golden brown and cheese is melted, 3 to 5 minutes.

These were as common in my home growing up as grilled cheese -- we ate them with warm soups for quick lunches & easy meals. I didn't realize until I moved away from home that most people have never heard of a grilled peanut butter sandwich. Made just like grilled cheese sandwiches, they are also warm and gooey and so easy to make it's almost silly!

Number Of Ingredients 3

2 slices bread
3 tablespoons peanut butter
2 tablespoons butter, softened, 2 tablespoons margarine, softened or 3 tablespoons of goats butter, softened

Steps:

  • Heat a skillet over medium heat until hot.
  • Meanwhile, spread the peanut butter on one slice of bread and top it with the other slice of bread. Butter the outsides of the bread, both sides.
  • Lay the sandwich on the hot skillet and let it brown until golden. Flip it over and cook the other side until it is also golden.
  • Serve warm!

There's the kind my Mom used to make me with two slices of white bread, two slices of American cheese, and white bread with butter slathered on each slice. If it was a good week we also got a cup of tomato soup to go with it. Today (National Grilled Cheese Day) we are putting a twist on the normal grilled cheese by adding all kinds of fresh ingredients, different types of cheeses, and a variety of breads. Our first is one of our favorites that blends a little bit of childhood with a more adult swagger: brie, apple, honey peanut butter, and some wheat French bread. This time we served it with the extra slices of apple and some sweet, delicious strawberry soda. There's no trick to this grilled cheese, on each sandwich we used two slices of apple, two thin slices of brie, honey peanut butter on both slices of bread, and a little butter on the outsides of the bread. We cooked it in a pan at medium heat and placed the panini press right on top, checked it every few minutes, then flipped it over when we could see it was browning on the bottom (use a spatula to lift up the edge of the sandwich).   • On each sandwich use two slices of apple. Two thin slices of brie. To taste, honey peanut butter on both slices of bread. A little butter on the outsides of the bread. Cook the sandwich in a pan at medium heat and place a panini press (if you have one) right on top (it's not ncessary, you can push down with a spatula). Check every few minutes, then flipped it over when you can see it is browning on the bottom (use a spatula to lift up the edge of the sandwich). Brown the second side the same way and wahlah! Sandwich complete and ready to eat!
