Pork roast is cooked in Dr Pepper and seasonings until tender, then shredded and served on crusty buns. Easy and delicious, it's a great way to feed a crowd or just a hungry family.

1 (3-4 lb) pork roast
1 tablespoon paprika
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 (12 oz.) can Dr Pepper
1 cup barbecue sauce
Rolls or sandwich buns, for serving

Steps:

  • In a small bowl, combine paprika, pepper, cayenne, garlic powder, onion powder and salt. Rub over pork roast.
  • In a lightly greased slow cooker, whisk together Dr Pepper and barbecue sauce. Place roast in slow cooker. Cover and cook on low for 8-10 hours.
  • Remove roast from slow cooker and shred with two forks. Return to slow cooker and toss with cooking liquid (if there is too much liquid, remove some before returning the roast to the slow cooker).
  • Serve shredded pork on sandwich buns with additional barbecue sauce, if desired.

Boneless Country Style Pork Ribs, slow cooked in Dr. Pepper, then baked to caramelize the Dr. Pepper BBQ sauce.

4.5 pounds boneless country style pork ribs
2 cans Dr. Pepper soda, divided
3/4 cup BBQ sauce (your favorite, we love our Sweet Baby Ray's!)

Steps:

  • Place ribs in the bottom of your slow cooker, pour 1 can of soda over them. Cover and slow cook for 7 hours on low or 4 hours on high.
  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Cover a cookie sheet with foil then place a wire rack over the top.
  • Combine 3/4 cup BBQ sauce with 1/2 cup Dr. Pepper soda.
  • Carefully remove the ribs from the slow cooker, placing on rack. Brush tops with sauce. Bake for 15 minutes, flip and brush other side. Bake 15 minutes more.
  • Serve remaining sauce at the table.

SLOW COOKER BBQ PULLED PORK RECIPE - NYT COOKING
If you’ve spent any time on Pinterest or food blogs, you’ve likely come across a recipe for three-ingredient barbecue pulled pork that can be made in the slow cooker. Methods and ingredients vary, but the recipe almost always calls for boneless pork shoulder, some sort of dark cola (usually Dr Pepper or root beer) and barbecue sauce. Dubious? We were too, so we asked the members of our NYT Cooking Community Facebook page if anyone had ever made it and if they liked it. We received more than 150 very opinionated responses. Many readers have come up with their own clever twists, like using coffee or beer in place of cola, adding onions or chipotles, rubbing the meat with a spice blend and searing the meat before cooking. We tried cooking it a few different ways and found we liked this adaptation best.   • Drain most of the liquid from the slow cooker and shred the meat directly in the pot. Add about 1/2 cup of the barbecue sauce and stir to combine.   • Add the onion to the pot. Add the soda and stir to thoroughly scrape up the browned bits at the bottom of the pot. Close the lid and cook on high pressure for one hour. Turn off the pressure cooker and allow the pressure to release naturally for 15 minutes. Open the lid. Using tongs or a slotted spoon, remove the pork and onion bits to a large serving bowl.
