CHINESE 5-SPICE OATMEAL COOKIES RECIPE - FOOD.COM

Chinese 5-Spice Oatmeal Cookies Recipe - Food.com image

When I purchased a bottle of Chinese 5-spice powder from my Watkins lady, this is the recipe that came with it. Chinese 5-spice is a blend of aromatic seasonings and includes the licoricy taste of star anise. You can find Chinese 5-spice prebottled in many grocery stores or at an Asian market (or from your local Watkins rep).

Total Time 30 minutes

Prep Time 15 minutes

Cook Time 15 minutes

Yield 36 serving(s)

Number Of Ingredients 12

2 cups quick-cooking rolled oats (not instant)
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup coarsely ground almonds
1 1/2 teaspoons Chinese five spice powder
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup unsalted butter
1 cup granulated sugar
1 cup brown sugar, packed
2 large eggs
2 1/2 teaspoons real vanilla extract

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350°F.
  • In a large bowl, mix together the oats, flour, ground nuts, 5-spice powder, cinnamon, baking powder, and salt.
  • In another bowl, using an electric mixer, cream the butter and both sugars until light and smooth.
  • Add eggs and vanilla to the butter mixture and beat well.
  • Add flour mixture to the butter mixture and beat until blended.
  • Drop by mounded tablespoonfuls onto lightly greased cookie sheets, leaving about 1 1/2" gap between each mound of batter.
  • Bake at 350° for 12-15 minutes or until done to your liking.
  • Cool on wire racks.
  • Makes about 3 dozen cookies.

FIVE-SPICE COOKIES RECIPE | COOKING LIGHT

Five-Spice Cookies Recipe | Cooking Light image

Look for five-spice powder on the spice aisle or with the Asian foods in your grocery store. We love the sparkle of sanding sugar used to coat the outside of the cookies; you’ll find it in craft stores. Supermarket turbinado works well, too.

Provided by Ann Taylor Pittman

Total Time 60 minutes

Yield Serves 25 (serving size: 1 cookie)

Number Of Ingredients 8

7 ounces whole-wheat pastry flour (about 2 cups)
1 1/2 teaspoons five-spice powder
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
2/3 cup packed dark brown sugar
1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
1 large egg
1/4 cup coarse sparkling sugar or turbinado sugar

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350°F. Whisk together flour, five-spice powder, salt, and baking soda in a medium bowl. Set aside. Beat together brown sugar and butter in a large bowl with an electric mixer at medium speed until fluffy, about 2 minutes. Beat in egg. Add flour mixture, and beat at low speed just until combined. Place sparkling sugar in a medium bowl. Roll dough into 25 balls (1 tablespoon each); roll in sugar to coat. Arrange dough balls 2 inches apart on 2 baking sheets lined with parchment paper. Bake at 350°F until set and starting to brown around edges, about 12 minutes. Cool on baking sheets set on a wire rack for 2 minutes. Transfer cookies directly to wire rack to cool completely. Store in an airtight container up to 3 days.

FIVE-SPICE GINGERSNAPS RECIPE | EPICURIOUS
Typical gingersnaps lean toward the soothingly plain; these are the opposite of that, spicy with chewy crystallized ginger and aromatic with Chinese five-spice powder. Left unadorned, the cookies will continue to crisp over time; iced, they become softer and more cakey.

  • If using icing and coloring it, transfer small batches of icing to small bowls, 1 for each color, and tint with food coloring. Spoon each color of icing into a separate pastry bag, pressing out excess air. Twist bag firmly just above icing, then decoratively pipe icing onto cookies. Let icing dry completely (about 1 hour, depending on humidity) before serving or storing cookies.
