Just and old family favorite that is simple to make, but delicious to eat.

Number Of Ingredients 12

⅓ cup boiling water
2 cups dates, pitted and chopped
½ cup shortening
1 cup white sugar
⅛ teaspoon ground cinnamon
¾ teaspoon salt
⅛ teaspoon ground nutmeg
2 eggs
1 cup all-purpose flour
¼ teaspoon baking soda
½ cup chopped walnuts
¼ cup confectioners' sugar

Steps:

  • In a small bowl, pour boiling water over dates, and set aside to cool. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C). Grease a 10x10 inch baking pan.
  • In a medium bowl, cream together the shortening and white sugar. Add eggs, one at a time, beating after each addition. Add the dates, including any water; mix well. Sift together the flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and baking soda; stir into the date mixture. Then stir in the nuts.
  • Spread the mixture evenly into the prepared 10x10 inch pan, and bake for 45 minutes in the preheated oven. When cool, cut into bars, and roll each bar in confectioners' sugar.

Number Of Ingredients 11

1/4 cup shortening
1-1/2 cups sugar
2 eggs
1-1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
3 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking soda
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
1-1/2 cups orange juice
1-1/2 cups chopped dates
1/2 cup chopped walnuts

Steps:

  • In a bowl, cream shortening and sugar. Add eggs and vanilla; beat until fluffy. Combine dry ingredients; add alternately to creamed mixture with orange juice. Blend well. Fold in dates and walnuts. , Pour into two greased, floured and waxed paper-lined 8x4-in. loaf pans. Bake at 350° for 45-50 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool in pans 10 minutes before removing to a wire rack.

Bake at 350° for 65-75 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool for 10 minutes before removing from pan to wire rack to cool completely. , In a small bowl, combine spread ingredients. Cover and refrigerate for 1 hour. Serve with bread.
