SPICY BAKED TOFU RECIPE | ALLRECIPES

Spicy Baked Tofu Recipe | Allrecipes image

This healthy, protein-packed tofu dish is filled with flavor. This is a spicy dish. I don't find it overly spicy but I like heat in my faux-meat! I served this with wilted garlic spinach and a fresh salad on the side. Remember that tofu is a concentrated protein, so you don't need as much tofu as you would meat. This dish is great reheated! If you want to be really creative, try grilling your tofu for an even more delicious result!

Cook Time 30 minutes

Yield 4 servings

Number Of Ingredients 6

1 serving cooking spray
1 (12 ounce) package tofu
2 tablespoons Japanese low-sodium soy sauce
2 tablespoons Asian chili sauce
2 tablespoons minced fresh ginger root
1?½ tablespoons hoisin sauce

Steps:

  • Lay the tofu on a plate lined with a couple sheets of paper towel. Layer more paper towel atop tofu and place another plate atop the stack to press water from the tofu. Let sit at least 5 minutes.
  • Cut tofu into 1/2-inch strips and put into a large, sealable plastic bag; add soy sauce, chili sauce, ginger, and hoisin sauce. Squeeze bag to remove excess air and seal. Marinate tofu in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour.
  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Prepare a baking sheet with cooking spray.
  • Remove tofu from the marinade, shake to remove excess moisture, and arrange onto the prepared baking sheet. Discard the remaining marinade.
  • Bake in preheated oven for 15 minutes, flip, and continue baking until firm, 15 to 20 minutes more.

SILKEN TOFU WITH SPICY SOY DRESSING RECIPE - NYT COOKING
This recipe is inspired by the many cold silken tofu dishes from East Asia, like Japanese hiyayakko and Chinese liangban tofu. This no-cook dish is a handy one to have up your sleeve, especially for warm evenings when the desire to cook is nonexistent. Silky soft tofu is draped in a punchy soy dressing, creating a lively dish with little effort. The tofu is ideally served cold, but 10 minutes at room temperature can take the edge off. Make it your own with other fresh herbs such as Thai basil, mint or shiso leaves, or add crunch with fried shallots or roasted peanuts. A salty, fermented element like kimchi, pickled radish or ja choi, also known as zha cai, a Sichuan pickled mustard root, would work well, too. One block of silken tofu is usually enough to feed two people, but for a more substantial meal, serve it with hot rice or noodles to create a pleasing contrast of temperatures. • Carefully drain the liquid from the package of tofu, and gently tip the block onto a kitchen towel. (Try to keep the block in one piece, if possible, but don’t worry if it falls apart; it will still taste great.) Pat with another clean kitchen towel, removing as much liquid as possible. Transfer the blocks to one large plate or two smaller plates, and spoon the soy dressing over the top until the tofu is completely covered. Top with scallions and cilantro leaves, and eat on its own or with rice or noodles on the side.

SPICY TOFU AND ZUCCHINI STEW RECIPE | FOOD & WINE
Sommelier Annie Shi, co-owner of King in New York City, grew up going to Korean restaurants with her family. Memories of dishes like Soondubu Jjigae, a spicy Korean tofu stew, became inspiration for a quick and easy stew of tofu and vegetables that she makes for cozy weeknight dinners. Anna Theoktisto's rendition of Shi's recipe features an umami-rich broth powered by Korean fermented soybean paste and a smart shortcut dashi (made using a store-bought sachet filled with dried anchovies, shrimp, and kelp). Shi likes to pair this tofu stew with Beaujolais: "Beaujolais has an incredible ability to cut through spice, and the brambly red fruit complements stronger flavors. I like to serve my Beaujolais with a good chill to bring out the freshness—another wonderful point of contrast to the savory stew."
