From what I saw in the first Google suggestion, farmers will inject the melon with nitrates to induce growth at a faster rate. However, those photos show a lot of yellowing (whereas the watermelon I'm currently eating and am wondering about has a fairly small yellow spot). In your case, I think the nitrate injection is possible.
