Making your own bread is a fun alternative to the usual store-bought loaf.

Number Of Ingredients 1

1 1/8 cups warm water 2 tbsp agave nectar 2 tbsp molasses 2 tbsp unsweetened applesauce 2 tbsp unsweetened almond milk 3 cups whole-wheat flour 1 1/2 tsp salt 3 tbsp vital wheat gluten 2 tbsp flaxseed meal 1 1/2 tsp bread-machine yeast

Steps:

  • 1. Add all liquid ingredients to bread-machine pan. Then add the dry ingredients as listed.  2. Set bread machine to light crust, 1 1/2-pound loaf size and basic setting.  3. When done, slice and serve.  Note: You can use whole flaxseed or wheat germ in place of flaxseed meal.

Nonstick cooking spray
2 cups white whole wheat flour
½ cup ground flaxseeds or flaxseed meal
2 teaspoons baking powder
½ teaspoon baking soda
¼ teaspoon salt
1 egg, lightly beaten
1?½ cups buttermilk
¼ cup vegetable oil
2 tablespoons sugar (see Tips)

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Lightly coat a 9x5-inch loaf pan with cooking spray.
  • In a large bowl stir together the flour, flaxseeds, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Make a well in center of flour mixture.
  • In a medium bowl combine the egg, buttermilk, oil and sugar. Add all at once to flour mixture. Stir just until moistened (batter should be lumpy). Spread batter in the prepared pan.
  • Bake 45 to 50 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool in pan 10 minutes. Remove bread from pan; cool on a wire rack. If desired, wrap and store overnight before slicing.
