A vegan recipe for Vegan Mozzarella Sticks.

1 block vegan mozzarella
oil for frying
1/2 cup flour
1/2 cup water
1 tablespoon cornmeal
1 tablespoon cornstarch
1 cup breadcrumbs
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon parsley flakes
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon onion powder
1/4 teaspoon oregano
1/4 teaspoon basil

Steps:

  • Combine ingredients for wet mix, flour through garlic powder. The consistency should be like pancake batter, so adjust accordingly if needed. In another bowl, stir together breadcrumbs and remaining spices. Slice vegan cheese into ½ inch strips. This recipe uses Follow Your Heart brand vegan cheese block. Lightly coat each stick with flour. Dredge each stick in the wet mix, then toss in bread crumbs until fully coated. Place sticks on a cookie sheet in a single layer and freeze for at least one hour. Pour an inch of oil into the bottom of a deep pot and heat. Carefully dip the end of a stick into the oil to check for readiness; if the oil sizzles continually, it’s ready. Once it’s up to temperature, fry sticks in batches about 1 minute per side or until they’re golden brown and you can see a little cheese oozing out. Serve immediately with marinara sauce for dipping.

400g block mozzarella (not in water)
50g flour
2 eggs
150g breadcrumbs
2 tsp smoked paprika
2 tsp dried oregano
vegetable or sunflower oil for frying
dips , to serve

Steps:

  • Cut the mozzarella into ‘chips’. Tip the flour into a bowl and season well. Whisk the eggs in a second bowl and tip the breadcrumbs, paprika and oregano into a third. Coat the mozzarella sticks in the flour, then the egg, then the breadcrumbs. Transfer to a parchment-lined tray and freeze for at least 2 hrs.
  • Heat enough oil to come 2-3cm up the side of a saucepan. When hot, drop in a test chip – it should sizzle straight away and brown within a minute or two. The secret is to cook them long enough to crisp up the outside without letting the mozzarella ooze out – it may take you a few practice chips to get it right. Cook the chips in batches and drain on kitchen paper. Serve hot with your favourite dip.
