Walnut Apple Dessert Recipe: How to Make It image

The neighbor who shared this recipe with me predicted that I'd serve it often, just as she has for more than 30 years. It's easy to put together and is wonderfully fruity. I like to serve it with ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream. —Diann Mallehan, Grand Rapids, Michigan

Number Of Ingredients 8

8 cups sliced peeled tart apples (about 6 medium)
2-1/4 cups packed brown sugar, divided
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 cup butter, softened
2 large eggs
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup finely chopped walnuts, divided
Vanilla ice cream, optional

Steps:

  • Place apples in a greased 13x9-in. baking dish. Sprinkle with 1/4 cup brown sugar and cinnamon. In a bowl, cream butter and remaining brown sugar. Beat in eggs. Stir in flour and 1/2 cup walnuts. Spread over apples. Sprinkle with remaining walnuts., Bake at 350° for 45-55 minutes or until the apples are tender. Serve warm, with ice cream if desired.

1 cup self-rising flour
1/2 cup sugar
2 tablespoons plus 1/4 cup baking cocoa, divided
1/2 cup whole milk
3 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 cup packed brown sugar
1-3/4 cups hot water
Vanilla ice cream, optional

Steps:

  • In a bowl, combine the flour, sugar and 2 tablespoons cocoa. Stir in milk and oil until smooth. Pour into a greased 8-in. square baking pan. Combine the brown sugar and remaining cocoa; sprinkle over batter. Pour hot water over top (do not stir). Bake at 350° until top of cake springs back when lightly touched, 40-45 minutes. Serve warm, with ice cream if desired.
