TWO-INGREDIENT-DOUGH BAGELS RECIPE | EATINGWELL

Two-Ingredient-Dough Bagels Recipe | EatingWell image

Traditional bagels are made with a yeast dough and boiled before they are baked. This much faster version uses a two-ingredient dough made from self-rising flour and Greek yogurt, which eliminates the need for a rise time. Sprinkle the bagels with your favorite toppings--like everything bagel seasoning--before baking.

Total Time 35 minutes

Number Of Ingredients 4

1 pound Two-Ingredient Dough (see associated recipe)
1 large egg
1 teaspoon water
1 tablespoon Sesame seeds, poppy seeds and/or dried minced onion or garlic for sprinkling

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Position rack in upper third of oven. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
  • Shape dough into a disk, then divide into 4 equal pieces. Using your hands, roll each piece into a rope, 9 to 10 inches long and 3/4 inch wide. Shape each rope into a bagel and place on the prepared baking sheet. Blend egg and water with a fork in a small bowl. Brush the egg mixture over the bagels. Sprinkle with sesame seeds, poppy seeds, minced onion and/or minced garlic, if desired.
  • Bake in the upper third of the oven until nicely browned on the bottom and lightly browned on top, about 25 minutes. Let cool completely before serving.

  • Preheat oven to 350°F. Line a sheet pan with parchment paper. Place flour and yogurt in a medium bowl; stir well with a spoon until just combined and then continue to knead dough by hand in the bowl until smooth, about 1 to 2 minutes. If dough is too sticky to knead, add 1 to 2 more tablespoons flour; let dough sit 5 minutes. Place dough on a lightly-floured surface; divide dough into 6 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball; place on prepared pan. Press your thumb or two pointer fingers into the center of each dough ball to create a hole so you form a bagel shape; repeat with remaining dough balls to form 6 bagels. Combine 2 tablespoons yogurt with 1 teaspoon water and mix.  Lightly brush bagel tops with yogurt mixture; sprinkle each bagel with ¾ teaspoon seasoning. Bake until lightly browned, about 15 to 20 minutes. Gently remove bagels from pan; enjoy warm or at room temperature.
