Tres Leches Cake is a classic Nicaraguan cake soaked with three forms of leches, or "milks." It’s a favorite among our fans, so we took our classic Tres Leches cake recipe and gave it a rich, chocolaty twist! A moist chocolate fudge cake is soaked with chocolate milk, topped with sweetened whipped cream and garnished with beautifully curled chocolate shavings for an indulgent dessert that's every chocolate lover's dream. The best part? It serves 15, making this a perfect-sized cake for any potluck or party.

1 box Betty Crocker™ Super Moist™ chocolate fudge cake mix
1 1/4 cups chocolate milk
1/2 cup butter, melted
4 eggs
1 can (14 oz) sweetened condensed milk (not evaporated)
1 cup chocolate milk
1/2 cup heavy whipping cream
1 1/2 cups heavy whipping cream
3 tablespoons powdered sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
Chocolate curls, if desired

Steps:

  • Heat oven to 350°F. Spray bottom only of 13x9-inch pan with cooking spray.
  • In large bowl, beat Cake ingredients with electric mixer on medium speed 2 minutes, scraping bowl occasionally. Pour into pan.
  • Bake 30 to 34 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Remove cake from oven to cooling rack. Immediately poke holes using fork over top of cake. If necessary, wipe fork tines occasionally with paper towel to reduce sticking.
  • In medium bowl, stir together Filling ingredients until blended. Evenly pour over cake, working back and forth to fill holes. Tap pan on counter several times to help filling mixture flow down holes. Refrigerate about 2 hours or until chilled (when cutting pieces to serve, you may notice some of the liquid on the bottom of the pan).
  • In chilled medium bowl, beat Topping ingredients with electric mixer on medium-high speed until stiff peaks form. Frost top of chilled cake with whipped cream. Sprinkle chocolate curls on top. Cut into 5 rows by 3 rows. Store loosely covered in refrigerator.

3 large Eggs (egg whites and yolk separated)
1 cup Dark Chocolate Chunks
1 stick Unsalted Butter (to melt chocolate)
¾ cup Granulated Sugar (divided)
1 Tsp Pure Vanilla Extract
¾ cup AP Flour
½ cup Dutch Processed Cocoa Powder
1 Tsp Baking Soda
½ Tsp Baking Powder
¼ Tsp Kosher Salt
1 cup Dark Chocolate chunks (melted)
¼ cup Heavy Cream (to make Chocolate Milk)
¼ cup Evaporated Milk
¼ cup Condensed Milk
1 cup Heavy Cream
¼ cup Melted Dark Chocolate (or 2 tbsp Dark Cocoa Powder)
1 Tsp Vanilla
2 Tbsp Granulated Sugar
Chocolate Shavings (for decoration)
Melted Dark Chocolate (for decoration (optional))

Steps:

  • Sperate Egg Yolks and Egg whites. Place the Eggwhites in a clean and moisture-free bowl. Beat over medium speed using a handheld mixer until foamy. Add 1 tbsp of granulated sugar and beat until you have stiff peaks in your Meringue. Keep this aside.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk together AP Flour, Cocoa Powder, Baking Soda, Baking Powder, and a pinch of Kosher Salt.
  • Melt Dark Chocolate chunks and Butter in a microwave-safe bowl. Stir until smooth and glossy. Allow it to cool down to room temperature for 5 minutes.Beat Egg Yolks with Granulated Sugar and Vanilla Extract. Now, combine the chocolate mixture with the Egg yolks mixture. Beat until glossy.
  • Stir in the dry mixture with the wet mixture. Do not overmix. Just mix until combined.
  • Fold the Meringue with the Cake Batter.
  • Place this Chocolate Tres Leches Cake mixture in the lined baking dish. Bake @350F (180C) for 20-25 minutes. After the cake gets baked, insert a toothpick in the center and check if its done. If it comes out clean, your cake is baked to perfection. Allow it to cool down to room temperature for about 5 minutes on the counter.
  • Whisk Melted Chocolate, Heavy Cream, Evaporated Milk. and Condensed Milk in a jar until combined.
  • Use a fork to prick the top of the cake. Poke holes all over the cake.
  • Pour the three milk mixture over the cake. Allow it to refrigerate covered for 2 hours, so that the cake soaks in all the moisture.
  • Whip Heavy Cream with granulated sugar and cocoa powder. Once you have stiff peaks, spread them over the cake. Even it out using an offset spatula.
  • Decorate the Chocolate Tres Leches Cake with some chocolate shavings or melted chocolate. Cut cake into equal-sized squares and serve.
