This was inspired by the Pinoy dessert. I lived in the Philippines for 4 months, so the other day as I was recreating some of the magic of pinoy food, I came across this recipe. Lacking banana leaves I created my own version!

Number Of Ingredients 5

1 pinch salt
2 cups calrose rice, short grain, glutinous
1 (8 ounce) can coconut milk, sweetened
1 head cabbage, leaves pulled off
water

Steps:

  • Boil water and cook cabbage leaves until soft – do not overcook.
  • Soak rice in salt water until it swells.
  • Drain Water. Add about 1 cup of coconut milk.
  • When the cabbage is soft, drain water.
  • Take a scoop of rice and place it down the middle of the cabbage leaves, gently roll the leaf around the rice. Be aware that the rice will expand, so do not fill them too full.
  • Place rice rolls in 1 cup of water and the rest of the coconut milk. Add any leftover liquid the rice was sitting inches Cover and bring the liquid to a boil then place on low heat, allowing the rice to cook for about 20 minutes.
  • Serve gently with a spatula.

Steamed Rice Rolls is made of rice flour, steamed to perfection and served with sweet sauce. Perfect as snacks and commonly served as one of the dim sum dishes. Recipe by Asian Inspirations

250g rice flour
76g tapioca flour
38g corn flour
50g oil
900ml water
2 tbsp Hoisin sauce
4 tbsp warm water
1 tbsp sugar
2 tsp sesame oil
white sesame seeds

Steps:

  • To Prep In a large bowl, combine all the flour ingredients. Pour in oil while using your other hand to slowly knead. Then, gradually pour in water while continuing to knead and mix, getting rid of any lumps until a smooth, watery batter is obtained. To Cook Prepare a steamer over high heat. Using a rectangular tray, lightly brush it with oil. Slowly pour in a thin layer of batter to cover the tray. When the water is boiling, place into the steamer and steam for 3 mins or until set. Remove from steamer and allow to cool for 2 mins. Tilt the tray and gently scrape off the layer while rolling into a long log. Transfer to a plate that has been lightly coated with oil. Repeat Step 2 and 3 with remaining batter. Slice the rolls just before serving. Mix sauce ingredients into a bowl and pour over steamed rice rolls. Garnish white sesame seeds.
