Crust
1 1/3 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup powdered sugar
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup cold Land O Lakes® Butter cut into chunks
Topping
3/4 cup sugar
15 dried plums
2 teaspoons cornstarch
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/8 teaspoon salt
1 large Land O Lakes® Egg
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1 tablespoon purple coarse sparkling or sanding sugar

Steps:

  • Heat oven to 350°F. Line bottom and sides of 8-inch square baking pan with aluminum foil; extending foil beyond ends. Grease foil.
  • Combine all crust ingredients except butter in medium bowl; cut in butter with pastry blender or fork until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Reserve 3/4 cup mixture. Pat remaining mixture onto bottom of prepared pan. Bake 15 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, place sugar, dried plums, cornstarch, baking powder, and 1/8 teaspoon salt in processor bowl fitted with metal blade. Cover; pulse until dried plums are finely ground. Add egg and lemon juice; continue processing 20 seconds to combine.
  • Pour plum mixture over hot, partially baked crust; sprinkle with reserved crust mixture and coarse sugar. Continue baking 30-35 minutes or until edges are browned and topping is set. Cool completely. Lift bars out using foil ends. Cut into bars.

6 ounces slivered almonds, toasted
4 ounces dried plums
4 ounces dried apricots
4 ounces dried figs
1/4 cup powdered sugar
1/4 teaspoon anise seeds, toasted
1/4 teaspoon fennel seeds, toasted
1/4 teaspoon caraway seeds, toasted
1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom
Pinch kosher salt
1/4 cup honey
1 cup coarse sugar

Steps:

  • Put the almonds, plums, apricots, and figs into the bowl of a food processor and pulse 20 to 25 times or until the fruit and nuts are chopped into small pieces, but before the mixture becomes a ball.
  • Combine the powdered sugar, anise seeds, fennel seeds, caraway seeds, cardamom, and salt in a medium mixing bowl. Add the nut and fruit mixture and the honey and mix using gloved hands until well combined.
  • Scoop the mixture into 1/4-ounce portions and roll into balls. If serving immediately, roll in the coarse sugar and serve. If not serving immediately, put the balls on a cooling rack and leave uncovered until ready to serve. Roll in the coarse sugar prior to serving.
  • The Sugarplums may be stored on the cooling rack for up to a week. After a week, store in an airtight container for up to a month.

The Times published Marian Burros’s recipe for Plum Torte every September from 1983 until 1989, when the editors determined that enough was enough. The recipe was to be printed for the last time that year. “To counter anticipated protests,” Ms. Burros wrote a few years later, “the recipe was printed in larger type than usual with a broken-line border around it to encourage clipping.” It didn’t help. The paper was flooded with angry letters. “The appearance of the recipe, like the torte itself, is bittersweet,” wrote a reader in Tarrytown, N.Y. “Summer is leaving, fall is coming. That's what your annual recipe is all about. Don't be grumpy about it.” We are not! And we pledge that every year, as summer gives way to fall, we will make sure that the recipe is easily available to one and all. The original 1983 recipe called for 1 cup sugar; the 1989 version reduced that to 3/4 cup. We give both options below. Here are five ways to adapt the torte.
