APPLE PASTRY SQUARES RECIPE: HOW TO MAKE IT
"We have four very productive apple trees in our backyard, so I make a lot of recipes that call for apples. Even then, we'll often end up giving bushels of them away. This apple dessert is one of my family's favorites. If you're serving a larger group, I've found that it goes a little further when cut into squares rather than slices like a traditional apple pie."

MOM'S APPLE SQUARES RECIPE | EATINGWELL
Traditional recipes for apple squares often use plenty of trans fat–laden shortening in the crust. We replaced it with a mixture of canola oil and butter and swapped out half the all-purpose flour for whole-wheat pastry flour for a little fiber. They are best enjoyed slightly warm. Gently reheat any leftovers in the oven or toaster oven to recrisp the crust.

  • Note: If you prefer sweeter, add 1/4 cup sugar to batter of bars, but remember the apple juice from the grated apples will provide some sweetness. We enjoy it as is because the carmel frosting is sweet. Also, we have had them with no frosting and just a sprinkling of powdered sugar on top. Enjoy!
