SPIDERWEB CAKE RECIPE | REAL SIMPLE

Spiderweb Cake Recipe | Real Simple image

This impressive-looking cake doesn't take much to master—all you'll need is a store-bought cake, a tub of white frosting, and a few drops of black food coloring. No pastry bag? No problem! Simply scoop the frosting into a plastic bag, then snip a small hole in the corner of the bag. The intricate design is merely a series of connected lines, which we've explained in detail below. We guarantee the cake will be all the talk at your Halloween party, even when displayed amongst other spooky snacks. After all, dessert always steals the show.

Provided by Colleen Riley

Total Time 5 minutes

Yield Serves 8

Number Of Ingredients 3

¼ cup white frosting
1 teaspoon black food coloring
1 store-bought vanilla-frosted 8-inch double-layer cake

Steps:

  • Combine the frosting and food coloring in a small bowl. Transfer the mixture to a pastry bag or plastic bag (snip a small hole in the corner of the bag).
  • Starting from the center of the cake draw nine lines with the frosting clockwise around the top to the edge. Connect the end of each line to the line next to it with an arched line. Move 1 inch towards the center and draw another series of arcs between the lines. Repeat two more times.
  • Pipe a small dot of icing for the head of the spider and a larger dot touching it for the body. Pipe four legs on each side of the body. Repeat as desired.

CHOCOLATE SPIDERWEB COOKIES RECIPE | MYRECIPES

Chocolate Spiderweb Cookies Recipe | MyRecipes image

Start with a recipe for basic chocolate cookies and turn them into Halloween treats by decorating the tops of the cookies with white icing in spiderweb design.

Provided by MyRecipes

Yield 2 dozen cookies (serving size: 1 cookie)

Number Of Ingredients 11

1 cup all-purpose flour
? cup unsweetened cocoa
½ teaspoon baking soda
? teaspoon salt
? cup vegetable shortening
? cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 large egg white
Cooking spray
2 cups powdered sugar, sifted
3 tablespoons 2% reduced-fat milk

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350º.
  • Lightly spoon flour into a dry measuring cup; level with a knife. Combine flour, cocoa, baking soda, and salt, stirring well with a whisk. Place shortening in a large mixing bowl; beat with a heavy-duty mixer at medium speed until light and fluffy. Gradually add the granulated sugar, 1 tablespoon at a time, beating until well blended. Add vanilla and egg white; beat well. Add flour mixture; beat until well blended.
  • Turn dough out onto wax paper; shape into a 6-inch log. Wrap log in wax paper. Freeze 2 hours or until very firm.
  • Cut log into 24 (1/4-inch) slices, and place slices 1 inch apart on baking sheets coated with cooking spray. Bake at 350º for 10 minutes or until set. Remove from pans; cool completely on wire racks.
  • Combine powdered sugar and milk in a medium bowl; stir well with a whisk until smooth. Spoon into a small zip-top plastic bag; seal. Snip a tiny hole in 1 corner of bag. Working with 1 cookie at a time, pipe 3 concentric circles onto each cookie. Starting at center circle, pull a wooden pick through other circles at regular intervals to create a "web."

  • With beaters or a standing mixer, whip the egg white and lemon juice until frothy. At medium speed, beat in the confectioners' sugar, a little at a time, until the mixture is thick but still liquid enough to beat. Then beat on high until the mixture is thick and glossy, about 3 minutes. Cover the surface with plastic wrap while waiting to use it. Royal icing will set to a firm, glossy finish when applied to a cookie. The icing can be stored, tightly covered, in the refrigerator for up to a week.
