Spiced Holiday Ham Recipe: How to Make It image

This glazed ham is one of my family's favorites, so I serve it often at holiday time. Currant jelly, mustard and brown sugar add a special flavor.

Number Of Ingredients 7

1 bone-in half ham (5 to 7 pounds)
15 whole cloves
1 jar (12 ounces) currant jelly
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 tablespoon vinegar
1 teaspoon ground mustard
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Steps:

  • Score ham; insert cloves in cuts. Place in a greased 13x9-in. baking dish. Bake, uncovered, at 325° for 20 minutes per pound. Combine jelly, sugar, vinegar, mustard and cinnamon; brush half over ham. Bake 15 minutes. Brush remaining jelly mixture over ham. Bake for 15 minutes, basting occasionally, or until a thermometer reads 140°.

1 fully cooked semi-boneless ham (8 to 10 pounds)
1/2 cup spicy brown mustard
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Whole cloves

Steps:

  • Place ham on a rack in a shallow roasting pan. Score the surface of the ham, making diamond shapes 1/2 in. deep. Combine the mustard, brown sugar, ginger and cinnamon; rub over surface of ham. Insert a clove in each diamond., Bake, uncovered, at 325° for 1-1/2 hours. Cover and bake 1-3/4 to 2 hours longer or until a thermometer reads 140°. Discard cloves. Let stand for 10 minutes before slicing.

Fairly economical if you get the ham on sale. I love to have it with orange rice where I substitute about a half a cup of OJ for water with plain old white or even brown rice, and a nice green salad. I couldn't find a true savory ham glaze, so I made up my own. It turned out so well, I just had to share! I bought a large ham (bone-in of course!) that I wanted to use the left overs, for other yummies later in the week. I don't necessarily like the sweet ham glazes, as it seems to linger with the leftovers. This will be great in scalloped ham and potatoes, ham and beans, omlets, sandwiches.. you name it!
