Number Of Ingredients 18

2 cups flour
1 1/2 cups sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
1 tablespoon cocoa
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon nutmeg
1 teaspoon allspice
1/2 cup oil
2 cups applesauce
2 eggs
1 cup raisins
8 ounces cream cheese, softened
4 tablespoons butter
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
2 1/2 cups confectioners' sugar
1/3 cup milk
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice or 1 tablespoon lime juice

Steps:

  • Mix first 8 ingredients together in an electric mixer; mix well.
  • Add next 3 ingredients.
  • Raisins should be added last.
  • Bake at 350°F in 9x13 inch pan for 30-35 minutes; tube pan 40-45 minutes.
  • Cool thoroughly and frost if desired.
  • For Frosting:Combine frosting ingredients in bowl.
  • Beat well, adding more milk or confectioners' sugar to make it smooth and easy to spread.

2 cups All Purpose Flour
2 teaspoons Baking Powder
½ teaspoon Salt
2 Tablespoon Dark Cocoa
1 teaspoon Cinnamon
1 teaspoon Ground Ginger
1 teaspoon Ground Cloves
1 teaspoon Allspice
½ teaspoon Nutmeg
½ cup Crisco Shortening
1 cup Dark Brown Sugar
½ cup Molasses
2 Eggs
¼ cup Evaporated Milk
½ cup Applesauce
1 cup Raisins, soaked in warm water until plumped, then drained.
1 pound confectioners’ sugar
1/2 cup butter, softened
½ tsp pure vanilla
3 Tablespoons Evaporated milk, more if needed

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour a 9x13 pan.

From 1972to1974, 800 hundred stores were closed Then in 1979 A&P was sold. If you miss the cake here it is. I have baked this cake years ago. It is loaded with raisins, spices, walnuts etc.Now I would like to share this famous cake with you.I remember going to the A&P in the early 40s for mom. When all the food & owner was behind the counter. He would take our order and even and even bag it!

Does anyone remember The Spanish Bar Cake that A&P grocery stores use to have? This is about as close as I have found to the real thing! The first bite brought back great memories YUM!!! I found this on another site a while back and just got around to making it. I frosted mine with a cream cheese frosting and it was perfect. Photo is my own
