SLOPPY JOE SANDWICHES : TASTE OF SOUTHERN

Sloppy Joe Sandwiches : Taste of Southern image

Here's a quick and easy comfort food recipe that makes some great sandwiches. I've loved a good Sloppy Joe Sandwich since my early days in school. Say what you want about school lunches, but I always enjoyed mine. I especially enjoyed the Yeast Rolls they served and they were even better on the days they used them as buns for Sloppy Joes.

Provided by Steve Gordon

Total Time 35 minutes

Prep Time 10 minutes

Cook Time 25 minutes

Yield 6

Number Of Ingredients 11

1 – pound of Ground Beef
1/2 – small Onion, chopped
1/2 – cup of Bell Pepper, chopped
1/2 – teaspoon of Granulated Garlic Powder
1/2 – teaspoon of Chili Powder
1 – 8oz. can of Tomato Sauce
1/4 – cup of bottled Ketchup
1/2 – cup of Water
1 – teaspoon of Mustard, the yellow kind in the bottle
1/2 – teaspoon of Ground Black Pepper
2 – Tablespoons of Brown Sugar

Steps:

  • Chop the Onion and the Bell Peppers.
  • Place the Ground Beef in a large skillet on medium heat.
  • Use a fork or spoon to chop up and separate the beef, stirring as you go.
  • When the beef has browned, add the Bell Peppers
  • Add the chopped Onions and stir it all up. Let it simmer for about 5 minutes, stirring as you go.
  • Add Granulated Garlic Powder
  • Add Chili Powder
  • Add Tomato Sauce
  • Add Ketchup and stir it again until it’s all mixed well.
  • Add Water
  • Add Mustard
  • Add Black Pepper
  • Add Brown Sugar and stir it all again.
  • Reduce the heat to medium-low and let the mixture simmer for about 20 minutes. You’ll need to stir it about every 5 minutes and watch for the level of the liquids to reduce sufficiently. Don’t let it get too dry, you want it to be juicy but not watery, sloppy and not dry.
  • Spoon the meat mixture over hamburger buns and Enjoy. Add cheese if you’re really adventuresome.

You can't beat a homemade dinner that will be on the table in just 30 minutes. If kids will be enjoying this meal, you may need to omit the jalapenos, or offer them as a topping for those that want to add a little taste of heat to their sandwich.

Provided by Southern Living

Total Time 30 minutes

Yield Makes 6 to 8 servings

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 1/2 pounds lean ground beef
1 (14 1/2-ounce) can diced tomatoes

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
2 tablespoons chopped pickled jalapeños (optional)
1 tablespoon liquid from pickled jalapeños (optional)
8 hamburger buns, toasted

SLOPPY JOE CASSEROLE RECIPE | SOUTHERN LIVING
We're taking the classic summer camp lunch and elevating it to a dinner-worthy casserole. There are few dishes more crowd-pleasing than a sloppy joe recipe, which is why we're capitalizing on this family favorite and making it even easier to prepare. With its sweet-savory blend of sauce and ground beef, kids are always asking for seconds when this dish is on the menu. It makes us feel great when they ask for seconds, and we love that they're filling up so that they'll be energized to tackle the upcoming week. In our homemade sloppy joe casserole recipe, there are a few differences from the typical sandwich—namely, you'll be losing the buns, and the kids will need to pick up a fork to dig in. It's just as exciting, though, and it still has all that you remember (and appreciate) about the traditional recipe. It takes what we love about homemade sloppy joes—the flavor, the fun, the easy prep—and turns it into a simple weeknight dinner. The only thing you'll love more than the reaction from your family is the quick prep time. It brings its own fun to the table. When they're eating sloppy joe casserole, kids can pretend that they're at summer camp, even if there's still geometry homework to do.
