This sauerkraut burger truly stands out. The sauerkraut adds a fresh tang that pairs well and highlights the savory beef flavor of the patty.

8 slices bacon
1¼ lb ground beef
2 tbsp vegetable oil
to taste kosher salt
to taste ground black pepper
4 burger buns
4 slices swiss cheese
¼ cup mustard
½ cup drained sauerkraut

Steps:

  • In a skillet, cook the bacon until crispy, between 5 and 10 minutes.
  • Once cooked, put the bacon on a paper towel-lined plate to sop up any excess grease and set aside to cool.
  • Preheat the grill on medium-high. Brush it with vegetable oil.
  • Take the ground beef and form it into four ¾-inch thick patties. Place the formed patties on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet.
  • Using your fingers, make a shallow well on the top of each burger.
  • Season the patties with the salt and pepper.
  • Place the patties on the grill, well side up, for about 5 minutes.
  • Flip over the burger and cook until your desired doneness. Remove from heat.
  • Cut the bread in half and spread each piece of bread with the mustard.
  • Put the patties, bacon and sauerkraut in between the bread slices.
  • Serve with potato chips or french fries.

I gal I worked with years ago, brought this to a potluck. Such comfort food! And yes, in Minnesota,, we call it Hotdish!!

1 lb hamburger
1/2 cup onion, chopped
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1 (10 1/2 ounce) can cream of mushroom soup
1 (10 1/2 ounce) can cream of chicken soup
2/3 cup milk
1 tablespoon butter
12 ounces egg noodles, cooked 5 minutes, and drained
3 cups shredded cheddar cheese
1 (15 ounce) can canned sauerkraut, drained

Steps:

  • Brown hamburger and onion, salt and pepper, drain. Add soups and milk. Stir.
  • Cook noodles, partially, about 5 minutes. They will finish cooking during baking time.
  • Either using a crock-pot(low heat), or a casserole dish, grease with butter, then layer in order, 1/2 of each. Noodles, sauerkraut, hamburger mixture, cheese.
  • Repeat.
  • Either cook in crock-pot on low 4 hours, or bake in a 350 oven, for 45 minutes, until hot and bubbly.

Simmer 15 minutes more if adding water. Season to taste with fresh-ground black pepper before serving. Serve hot, with sour cream if desired.
