These Fried Green Tomatoes with Special Sauce are sooo freakin’ good that you'll almost eat the entire plate on your own and plus they're vegan! Pair this with beer – mildly bitter pale ales or a hoppy IPA or wine – a dry sparkling rosé, sauvignon blanc, pinot grigio.

3 Green Tomato
1/2 cup Unsweetened Soy Milk
1/2 cup Whole Wheat Flour
1/2 cup Panko Breadcrumbs
1 tablespoon Tapioca Starch
1 teaspoon Salt
1/2 teaspoon Freshly Ground Black Pepper
to taste Vegetable Oil
1 Avocado
3 tablespoon Vegan Mayo
1 tablespoon Buffalo Sauce
1 teaspoon Nutritional Yeast
1/4 teaspoon Garlic Powder
to taste Salt

Steps:

  • Slice the Green Tomato (3) into 1/3 inch circles.
  • Put Unsweetened Soy Milk (1/2 cup) in a small bowl and put Whole Wheat Flour (1/2 cup), Panko Breadcrumbs (1/2 cup), Tapioca Starch (1 tablespoon), Salt (1 teaspoon), and Freshly Ground Black Pepper (1/2 teaspoon) in another small bowl and mix.
  • Dip tomato in milk, covering both sides, and then dip and fully coat tomato slice in dry mix. Repeat with all tomatoes.
  • In a large frying pan, pour Vegetable Oil (to taste) to a depth of approximately 1/4 inch.
  • Gently place the tomatoes in the pan on high. Fry each side for approximately 2 minutes, or until golden brown.
  • Remove from pan and place on paper towels.
  • In a small bowl, smash Avocado (1) with a fork. Add Vegan Mayo (3 tablespoon),Buffalo Sauce (1 tablespoon), Nutritional Yeast (1 teaspoon), Garlic Powder (1/4 teaspoon), and Salt (to taste).
  • Stir until almost smooth.
  • Serve fried tomatoes with special sauce and enjoy!

1 (8 ounce) container sour cream (about 1 cup)
2 tablespoons mayonnaise or 2 tablespoons salad dressing
1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
1 tablespoon prepared horseradish
salt & freshly ground black pepper
3 -4 green tomatoes
salt
1 egg white
1 cup self-rising cornmeal, mix
1/2 cup butter or 1/2 cup margarine
1 teaspoon pepper

Steps:

  • In small bowl, combine all sauce ingredients; mix well. Cover and refrigerate.
  • Slice tomatoes about 3/8-inch thick. Sprinkle lightly with salt. In shallow dish, beat egg white with fork. Place corn meal mix on plate or in shallow dish.
  • In large skillet over medium-high heat, melt 2 tablespoons butter. Dip tomatoes in egg mixture, then in corn meal mix to coat. Add tomato slices to skillet in single layer.
  • Cook over medium-high heat until golden brown; turn and cook until browned on other side.
  • Drain on paper towels.
  • Repeat with remaining ingredients, adding butter as needed.
  • Serve warm with Horseradish Sauce.
