Steps:
- Grease a 9"-x-13" baking pan with butter. In a large pot over medium heat, melt butter. Add marshmallows and salt and stir until completely melted. Continue cooking until marshmallows turn slightly golden, another 5 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in Rice Krispies. Pour into pan and smooth top, being careful not to pack Rice Krispies into the pan too much. Let cool completely before slicing and serving.
CARAMELIZED BROWN BUTTER RICE KRISPIES TREATS - NYT COOKING
This absurdly easy recipe came to The Times from Colin Alevras, then the chef at the Tasting Room in New York, which, until it closed in 2008, offered Rice Krispies treats every day, and made more for Halloween. Browning the butter elevates these plebeian snacks into something more toothsome, and it adds just an extra couple of minutes to the process. They’re so good. (The original recipe called for one bag of marshmallows, but after retesting, we've updated it to call for two bags. This should yield a chewier, gooier treat.)

- Line rimmed sheet pan with parchment paper or wax paper, or butter it well.
- In a large pot, melt butter over medium-low heat. It will melt, then foam, then turn clear golden and finally start to turn brown and smell nutty. Watch closely and stir often.
- When butter is evenly browned, stir in marshmallows. (If using unsalted butter, stir in 1/8 teaspoon salt.) Melt and cook, stirring often, until mixture turns pale brown, then stir constantly until lightly browned but not dark, 3 to 5 minutes.
- Turn off heat, add cereal, and mix well, preferably with a silicone spoon or a spatula. Scrape into prepared pan and press down lightly. If necessary, butter hands to press mixture flat. Let cool, and cut into squares or bars.

- Melt butter in a large saucepan over medium-low heat. Stir in marshmallows and food coloring, mixing until combined, about 2 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in cereal. Spread onto a a sheet of wax paper. Let cool for 3-4 minutes. Spritz hands with cooking spray or grease with vegetable oil so the treats don’t stick to your hands. Mold the treats into the shape of the Grinch’s head, which looks a lot like the curved base of a violin. Press two yellow M&Ms into each treat, where the eyes should be. Place frosting in a piping bag or a resealable bag with the corner snipped off to draw the Grinch’s mouth and nose on each treat, as well as a pupil on each M&M “eye” and eyebrows on top. Draw a squiggle for the hair on top of his head.

- Bake immediately. After 7 minutes, remove the pan from the oven and sprinkle the chocolate chips evenly over the crackers. Return to the top rack of the oven and bake for 2 minutes more. Spread the chocolate evenly over the crackers with a clean spatula. Cool for 20 to 30 minutes before transferring the tray to the freezer. The next day, peel off the foil and break the brickle into pieces. Keep frozen or refrigerated.
