Angel Sugar Cookies Recipe - Pioneer Woman Sugar Cookies image

Ree's favorite sugar cookie recipe is perfect for all your holiday baking needs. Decorate these cookies with your family, or make them for a Christmas cookie swap.

whole large eggs

1 c.

canola oil

2

sticks butter, softened

1 c.

sugar, plus extra for sprinkling

1 c.

powdered sugar

1 tsp.

vanilla extract

4 c.

plus 2 tablespoons, all-purpose flour

1 tsp.

salt

1 tsp.

baking soda

1 tsp.

cream of tartar

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. In a large mixing bowl, cream together eggs, oil, butter, sugars, and vanilla. Add remaining ingredients and mix well. Cover and refrigerate dough one hour. Using a cookie scoop, drop balls of dough onto an ungreased cookie sheet.  Smear a dab of butter all over the bottom of a glass, then dip the glass in granulated sugar. Use the glass to flatten each ball of dough, dipping again into the sugar each time. Repeat until all are flattened.  Bake for 9 to 11 minutes, until cookies are just barely turning brown. Don't overbrown! Allow to cool before eating. Cookies are ultra crumbly!

For the Cookies:

2/3 c.

shortening

3/4 c.

sugar

1/2 tsp.

grated orange or lemon zest

1/2 tsp.

vanilla

1

whole egg

4 tsp.

milk

2 c.

flour

1 1/2 tsp.

baking powder

1/4 tsp.

salt

For the Egg Yolk Glaze:

1

whole egg yolk

1 tsp.

water

2

drops (to 3) food coloring

For the White Decorative Icing:

1

bag 2 lb. powdered sugar

1/4 c.

milk

2 tbsp.

egg white (optional)

Steps:

  • Cream shortening, sugar, orange peel, and vanilla thoroughly. Add in egg and beat until light and fluffy. Add in the milk and mix. Sift dry ingredients together, then blend into cream mixture. Divide dough in half (thirds if you double your recipe), slightly flatten between two sheets of waxed paper, then refrigerate for one hour (or freeze for 20 minutes). While dough is chilling, combine egg yolk, water and food coloring to make the egg yolk glaze.  Roll out dough on lightly floured surface and cut into shapes with a cookie cutters. Transfer shapes to lightly greased cookie sheet and paint cookies (with a soft brush) with egg yolk glaze. After brushing with egg yolk glaze, bake at 375 degrees for approximately 6 minutes. Do not allow the cookies to brown. While cookies are baking, mix powdered sugar, milk and egg whites (which are optional) to make the decorative icing. Remove cookies from oven to a wire rack to cool. Then, using a pastry bag or Ziploc bag, pipe with white icing to decorate.

  • To make the dough: Add the shortening (or butter), sugar, and zest to the bowl of an electric mixer. Beat until smooth, then add the eggs and vanilla. Beat again, scraping the sides of the bowl halfway through. Sift together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Alternate adding the dry ingredients with the milk until the dough comes together. Divide the dough in half, then flatten both halves into discs and place them in separate plastic bags. Chill the dough for a couple of hours. (Note that if you use butter in the dough, you won't need to refrigerate it as long; or if you do, you'll need to allow more time for the dough to soften before you roll it out.)After the dough is chilled, preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Roll out both halves of the dough to 1/3 inch thick and cut out as many cookies as you can. Place the cookies on a baking sheet lined with a baking mat or parchment paper and bake them for 8 to 10 minutes, or until they're just barely done. You want them to be set, but not brown. Remove them from the oven and let them cool completely before decorating.To make the frosting, beat the butter, sugar, and cream until very light and fluffy. Divide the frosting into smaller portions and color with food coloring as desired. Use a dinner knife to spread the frosting on the cookies, then use sanding sugar, sprinkles, and other decorations to make 'em purty!

Beat in the egg until light and fluffy, then beat in the milk. Sift the flour, baking powder and salt into a medium bowl. With the mixer on low speed, beat the flour mixture into the butter mixture until just combined. Divide the dough in half; flatten each half between 2 sheets of parchment or wax paper, wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour or freeze for 20 minutes. For the glaze: Whisk the egg yolk, water and food coloring in a small bowl until well combined. Preheat the oven to 375 °. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper. Roll out 1 piece of dough on a lightly floured surface until about 1/4 inch thick. Cut into stars or other shapes with 2- to 3-inch cookie cutters. Arrange the cookies about 2 inches apart on the prepared pans. Brush the tops with the egg yolk glaze. Bake the cookies until set but not browned, about 6 minutes. Let cool 3 minutes on the pan, then remove to racks to cool completely. Decorate with royal icing and sanding sugar. Let set about 1 hour.

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Mix sugar, shortening, molasses, and egg together until well combined. Dump in dry ingredients, stirring dry ingredients together lightly. Mix together until dough is combined. In your hands roll dough into walnut-sized balls, then generously coat each ball with sugar. Place balls on a baking sheet and bake for 9 to 11 minutes, allowing to bake for about a minute after cookies begin to crack. Remove cookies from baking sheet and allow to cool…though these are delicious while still warm.

    Fun variation: Drizzle melted white chocolate in decorative stripes over the top of each cookie. Allow to harden before serving. Or: dip half of each cookie in melted white chocolate. Yum.

    Another fun variation: Roll the cookie dough in gold, sparkling sugar instead of granulated sugar before baking. Crunchy, sweet and sparkly!

    Another fun, fun variation: make sandwiches using two cookies and a scoop of cinnamon ice cream. Yikes.  

    Another really fun variation: eat all the cookies yourself, then hide all the evidence.
