I was having company one day and looking for just the right sauce for hot dogs. I called Grandma, who shared this wonderful recipe.—Melissa Norris, Churubusco, Indiana

Yield 4 cups.

Number Of Ingredients 10

4 cups water
1-1/2 pounds ground beef
1 medium onion, chopped
1 can (28 ounces) tomato sauce
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1-1/2 teaspoons chili powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
Hot dogs, heated
Hot dog buns, split

Steps:

  • In a large saucepan, bring water to a boil. Carefully crumble beef into water. Add onion. Boil until meat is no longer pink; drain. Add the tomato sauce, brown sugar, chili powder, salt and pepper. Simmer, uncovered, for 15 minutes or until heated through. Serve over hot dogs in buns.

Yield enough for about 20 hot dogs, hamburgers, or 6 garbage plates

Number Of Ingredients 15

1 medium onion, chopped
1 teaspoon oil
1 pound ground beef
1 cup water
1/4 cup tomato paste
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 teaspoon black pepper
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 teaspoon chili powder
1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
1/2 teaspoon allspice
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
salt to taste
1 clove garlic, diced or pressed through a garlic press

Steps:

  • In a large skillet, fry onion and garlic in oil until soft. Add meat and spices, stirring constantly with fork to keep the beef broken up. Once the meat browns, add water, tomato paste and brown sugar. Simmer 10 minutes. Go through it with an immersion blender to give it a finer texture similar to triple ground beef. Simmer 1 hour, adding water if necessary to keep it moist but not soupy. Original recipes call for triple ground beef which is too difficult to obtain and not worth the effort.

  • Heat a large nonstick skillet over medium heat. Add ground beef and cook, breaking up meat with a wooden spoon, until no longer pink, 6 minutes. Drain fat and return to heat. Add tomato paste and cook until slightly darkened in color, 2 minutes. Add mustard, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, chili powder, garlic powder, and onion powder and season with salt and pepper. Stir to combine, then add water and bring to a simmer. Cook until all water is evaporated, 5 minutes.  Serve over hot dogs, then top with cheddar and onions.
