• Cut the domed tops off the cakes to give a level surface. Slice both cakes in half horizontally and sandwich back together with jam.

  Shaping the cake

  The oval cake will become the cat's head and the round cake its body. To fit the two together, use the oval cake tin as a template to cut around, removing a curved section from one side of the round cake. Then fit the two cakes together neatly, securing with a little buttercream. Cover the whole cake with a thin coat of buttercream.

  Colour 560 g (1 lb 2 oz) of the sugarpaste green and use to cover the board. Leave to dry.

  Reserve 125 g (4 oz) of the sugarpaste and colour the remainder off-white using cream food colouring. Roll out the sugarpaste and cover the cake. Secure the cake to the board with a little royal icing.

  Cat features

  Colour 25 g (¾ oz) of the sugarpaste pink, a tiny piece red and the remainder black. Using the off-white coloured trimmings and the other colours, model the eyes, nose, mouth, tail and paws.

  Make templates from the outline, left, for the inner and outer ears. Roll out the pink sugarpaste and white trimmings, then cut out the ears. Attach the pink inner ear to the white outer ear with a little water. Leave all these pieces to dry.

  Using black food colouring with a small amount of royal icing added to thicken, paint on the body markings. Attach all the features, ears and tail and six liquorice whiskers with dabs of royal icing. Trim the cake board with ribbon, securing with double-sided tape.
