Easy Fried Dough (Pizza Fritte) | Just A Pinch Recipes image

This was one of our favorite treats, growing up. Mom would fry dough for breakfast, lunch or a snack. I've carried this tradition down to my children and grandchildren, and I know they're going to do the same with their families. One of the easiest recipes I can give you, actually, not a recipe at all. Just some simple instructions.

1 pound(s) prepared pizza or bread dough (you can purchase this at your local grocery store, or make your own)
- vegetable or canola oil for frying
- large frying pan with deep sides

Steps:

  • Pour about 1" of oil into frying pan, and heat to medium-high. (A tip for knowing when your oil is ready: tear off a tiny piece of bread and when it floats to the top and has bubbly sides it’s ready. You don’t want it sinking to the bottom.)
  • Place dough on floured board and press down to even out a bit. Cut into 8 equal pieces. Put a little flour on your hands (so the dough won't stick) and gently stretch out the dough as far as it will go, without ripping it.
  • Carefully place into the hot oil, cook about a minute (goes fast) or until the side down is golden, then turn over and brown the other side. (Never leave the stove when you're frying something. I learned the hard way, and burned down my first house. Yeah, true story!)
  • Use tongs to remove onto a paper towel or brown paper bag, to drain off any excess oil. Immediately sprinkle on cinnamon sugar or powdered sugar or spread on some butter, and various other toppings, if desired. Serve warm.
  • Your choice of toppings are endless: Powdered sugar Granulated sugar Cinnamon sugar Butter Jam Honey

Stir in flour, 1 cup at a time, until a soft dough forms. , Turn onto a floured surface; knead until smooth and elastic, 2-3 minutes. Place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease the top. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 45 minutes. Meanwhile, cook beef and onion over medium heat until beef is no longer pink, breaking meat into crumbles; drain. , Punch down dough; divide in half. Press each half into a greased 12-in. pizza pan. Combine the tomato sauce, oregano and basil; spread over each crust. Top with beef mixture, green pepper and cheese. , Bake at 400° for 25-30 minutes or until crust is lightly browned.

  • On a clean, floured surface, gently flatten ball of dough with your hands until about 8” in diameter (or roughly smaller than your air fryer basket). Repeat with second dough ball. Brush both with olive oil and transfer one, oil side up, into the basket of your air fryer. In a medium bowl, stir to combine crushed tomatoes, garlic, and oregano, and season with salt and pepper. Spoon half tomato mixture onto the center of rolled out pizza dough, then spread into an even layer, leaving ½" outer crust bare. Add half the mozzarella slices to pizza. Air fry on 400° for 10 to 12 minutes, or until crust is golden and cheese is melted.  Remove first pizza from air fryer basket using 2 pairs of tongs, and garnish with basil leaves. Assemble and cook second pizza, garnish, and serve.
