PEAS PARATHA | PINK LEMON TREE
I could never enjoy a glass of watermelon juice during the monsoons. Neither does the taste of a mango appeal to me after summer has passed. That's why it amazes me (not in a good way!!!) when I see people downing a glass of 'fresh' watermelon juice in the middle of the year and talk about leading a healthy diet ! [caption id="attachment_6801" align="aligncenter" width="435"] Stuffed paratha[/caption] It's not healthy for us or for the environment if we are eating foods which are not grown according to the season. Did you know that green peas are actually a winter vegetable ? In South India where I live, it is eaten throughout the year ! What happens when we don't eat according to the seasons is actually quite alarming...not just for human health but also for the health of the planet . To put it in lay man terms, when plants are grown in an artificial manner with added fertilisers and they produce flowers and fruits, the insects and other bacteria responsible for pollination and maintaining native bio-diversity get all confused. They don't know how to handle produce which is out of season and confuses their natural cycle. Pest attacks increase, the soil responds differently and that in turn effects the climate... All this because we want watermelon juice all year round. Why blame the poor farmer for not adopting organic practices !?! All he's doing is finding ways to feed his family by slaving to consumer demands. [caption id="attachment_6800" align="aligncenter" width="482"] Peas paratha[/caption] Try the green peas paratha. It's wholesome and gives plenty of cuddly comfort during the October rains.

BROWNIES | PINK LEMON TREE
Over the years there have been so many brownie recipes that my oven has had the pleasure of baking and I can honestly say that we've never had a bad brownie experience ever. But this one deserves special mention simply because of the ease in making. https://www.kannammacooks.com/fudge-brownies-recipe/ The original recipe is from Suguna Vinodh of 'Kanamma cooks' fame. She delights people all across the world with her easy recipes and delicious home cooked fare and has won the hearts of everyone who follow her blog. At one point in time I did wish for my own blog to get as popular until I realised how much more work went into what she does. It takes a tremendous amount of time and hard work and must be applauded. So when she shared this brownie recipe on her IG feed during lock down, it looked too good to pass up. For almost a decade now we don't use refined flour or sugar for baking .It is therefore an automatic choice for me to use alternative flours and natural sugars. In no way do I suggest that our choice is healthier or better, it is just each to their own. This recipe does not warrant the need to pull out heavy equipment, all it needs is a hand held whisk and a spatula which makes the washing up so much easier . I am not sure how long brownies last in your home but here they can vanish in the twinkling of an eye. I said 'can' ...I do try various techniques (new hiding spots) to ensure it lasts a few days. And that's precisely why a recipe like this comes to the rescue even when time is in short supply ! Here's to a joyous December.
