LIEGE BELGIAN WAFFLES WITH PEARL SUGAR RECIPE | ALLRECIPES

Liege Belgian Waffles with Pearl Sugar Recipe | Allrecipes image

These are sweeter than traditional Brussels Belgian waffles - a sweeter waffle that can be served for breakfast or dessert. Serve waffles warm or cooled with whipped cream and berries or drizzled with warm, melted chocolate.

Provided by BRSMITH63

Categories     Waffles

Total Time 1 hours 20 minutes

Prep Time 15 minutes

Cook Time 20 minutes

Yield 10 waffles

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 (.25 ounce) package active dry yeast
1 ½ tablespoons white sugar
¾ cup lukewarm milk
3 eggs
1 cup melted butter
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
3 cups flour
½ teaspoon salt
1 ½ cups pearl sugar (such as Lars' Own®)

Steps:

  • Sprinkle the yeast and white sugar over warm milk in a small bowl. The milk should be no more than 100 degrees F (40 degrees C). Let stand for 15 minutes until the yeast softens and begins to form a creamy foam.
  • Whisk the eggs, melted butter, and vanilla extract into the yeast mixture until evenly blended; set aside. Stir together the flour and salt in a separate large bowl, and make a well in the center. Pour the egg mixture into the well, then stir in the flour mixture until a soft dough forms. Cover with a light cloth and let rise in a warm place (80 to 95 degrees F (27 to 35 degrees C)) until doubled in volume, about 30 minutes. Gently mix in the pearl sugar.
  • Preheat a waffle iron according to manufacturer's instructions.
  • Place a baseball-size ball of dough on the preheated waffle iron. Cook waffles until golden and crisp, about 2 minutes. Repeat with remaining dough. Allow waffles to cool for 2 to 3 minutes before serving.

PEARL BARLEY CASSEROLE RECIPE | ALLRECIPES

Pearl Barley Casserole Recipe | Allrecipes image

This is a very tasty way to serve a very healthy grain that is often overlooked. I never use the mushrooms as I don't care for them and often add chopped carrots, red pepper, or grated zucchini.

Provided by Pjaros

Categories     Grain Side Dishes

Total Time 1 hours 0 minutes

Prep Time 15 minutes

Cook Time 45 minutes

Yield 4 servings

Number Of Ingredients 8

3 tablespoons butter
1 large onion, chopped
2 ribs celery, chopped
1 cup pearl barley
1 (8 ounce) package sliced fresh mushrooms
1 green bell pepper, chopped
2 cups chicken broth
salt and ground black pepper to taste

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  • Melt butter in a 1 1/2-quart Dutch oven or oven-safe pot over medium heat and cook onion until lightly browned, 5 to 8 minutes. Add celery and cook until starting to soften, stirring often, about 5 more minutes. Mix barley into the vegetables and stir until coated with butter. Fold mushrooms and green pepper into barley mixture; season to taste with salt and black pepper. Pour chicken broth into barley mixture and bring to a boil; cover casserole dish.
  • Bake in the preheated oven until barley is nearly tender, about 30 minutes; uncover casserole dish and bake barley until most of the liquid has been absorbed, about 15 more minutes. Adjust salt and black pepper before serving.

PASTA PUTTANESCA RECIPE - NYT COOKING
There are almost as many explanations for the origins of pasta puttanesca as there are ways to make it. Ostensibly a sauce invented and made by prostitutes, it was designed to lure customers with its powerful aroma. Whatever the origin, no better cold-weather pasta sauce has come down to us. Puttanesca can be made completely with ingredients from the larder; in fact, it can be prepared entirely without ingredients that require refrigeration, though a bit of a fresh herb at the end does help. The basis is a garlicky tomato sauce; canned tomatoes are preferable here. This is brought to a high level of flavor by the addition of anchovies, capers and olives. Red pepper flakes make things even better. The whole process is ridiculously easy.

    1. Preheat the oven to 180°C/350°F/gas 4.
    2. In a large pan, cover the pearl barley with plenty of cold water and leave to soak.
    3. Put a large casserole pan on a medium-high heat with 1 tablespoon of oil and the whole pickled onions. Peel and quarter the regular onion, then pull the quarters apart into petals and add to the pan.
    4. Stir regularly while you wash and trim the carrots and celery and slice both ½cm thick at an angle. Stir them into the pan, then strip in the thyme leaves.
    5. Cook and stir for 10 minutes, while you peel the swede and chop it into 3cm chunks, and finely chop the dried porcini. Stir both into the pan, then slice the beef 3cm thick and add that, too.
    6. After a couple of minutes, pour in the stock and Guinness. Bring up to a simmer, cover with a scrunched sheet of wet greaseproof paper, and cook in the oven for 1 hour.
    7. Remove the paper, then cook the stew for another hour, or until the meat is tender.
    8. Drain the pearl barley and re-cover with boiling water, then cook according to the packet instructions.
    9. Pick through your greens, discarding any tough stalks, and steam in a colander or sieve above the pearl barley for the last 10 minutes.
    10. Reserving a little cooking water, drain the pearl barley and return it to the pan, grate over the cheese, add the English mustard and a splash of the reserved water, and mix together.
    11. Taste the stew and season to perfection, then serve up with the mustard pearl barley and the freshly steamed greens on the side.

MOROCCAN M'HANNCHA VEGAN PIE RECIPE | JAMIE OLIVER RECIPES

    1. Cook the pearl barley according to the packet instructions, then drain.
    2. Wash the squash, then carefully cut it in half lengthways and remove the seeds. Peel the onions and garlic, and deseed the peppers. Chop the squash, onions and peppers into 1cm dice. Finely chop the garlic with the coriander stalks (reserving the leaves).
    3. Place it all in a pan on a medium-low heat with 2 tablespoons of oil, the chilli flakes, fennel and cumin seeds, and the ground coriander. Sweat with a lid on for 25 to 30 minutes, or until soft but not coloured, stirring occasionally.
    4. Destone the dates and finely chop the flesh with the apricots and coriander leaves. Fold into the veg pan with the drained pearl barley, squeeze in the lemon juice, season to perfection, then leave to cool.
    5. Preheat the oven to 180ºC/350ºF/gas 4.
    6. Lay out two clean damp tea towels on a large work surface, side-by-side, with the longest edges facing you. Working quickly but taking care, lay out 3 sheets of filo side-by-side with the short edges towards you, overlapping each one by 2.5cm and brushing between the overlaps with water.
    7. Lightly brush the sheets with oil, place 3 filo sheets directly on top, then repeat with another 3 sheets. Save the remaining sheet for patching up.
    8. As evenly as possible, spoon your filling in a line along the long edge closest to you. Brush the opposite long edge with a little oil.
    9. Now, I’d recommend finding a friend to help you roll it up. Working slowly and carefully, use the tea towels to help you roll it up and away from you into a giant cigar, keeping it on the damp tea towel at all times. Roll it into a large pinwheel, working quickly but handling it gently to avoid too many cracks.
    10. Gently slide it onto a large greased baking tray, and patch up any gaps, if needed. Brush all over with more oil and bake for 45 to 50 minutes, or until gorgeous, crisp and golden.
    11. Ten minutes before the end, smash and sprinkle over the pistachios and an extra pinch of each of the spices, if you like.
    12. Serve with a super-light dusting of icing sugar. Delicious with all the usual trimmings, or served with a spiced tomato sauce.
