This recipe was made by my mother only around Christmas time. Now, I carry on the tradition of this sweet confection.

Number Of Ingredients 8

1 cup margarine, softened
2 pounds confectioners' sugar, sifted
1 (14 ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
3 cups coconut
1 cup finely chopped walnuts
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 (12 ounce) package semisweet chocolate chips
2 tablespoons shortening

Steps:

  • In large bowl, combine margarine, confectioners' sugar, condensed milk, coconut, chopped walnuts and vanilla. Stir well. Cover and chill in the refrigerator for 2 hours, or until mixture has thickened enough to roll into balls. Roll the mixture into 1-inch balls and place close together, but not touching, on cookie sheets. Freeze until hard.
  • While bonbons are freezing, line a cookie sheet or flat surface with waxed paper. Combine chocolate chips and shortening in the top of a double boiler, over, not in, simmering water. Stir until melted. Using a toothpick or a fork, dip each bonbon in the melted chocolate. Place on waxed paper to dry. When chocolate has hardened, store bonbons in plastic bag in the freezer.

Yield Makes about 18 bonbons

Number Of Ingredients 5

10 ounces extra-dark chocolate, finely chopped
2 ounces good-quality white chocolate from a bar, chopped
1 cup finely crushed chocolate wafer cookies
1 pint caramel, strawberry, chocolate, vanilla or coffee ice cream
Flaky sea salt, for sprinkling

Steps:

  • In a medium heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water, melt the dark and white chocolates together. Scrape into a smaller bowl and let cool slightly.
  • Put the crushed cookies on a small plate. Line 2 baking sheets with wax paper and place one in the freezer. Fill a cup with ice water.
  • Working very quickly, scoop a 1-tablespoon-size scoop of ice cream, packing it tightly. Transfer it to the melted chocolate. Using a skewer, poke the rounded top of the ice cream and coat the ball in the chocolate. Lift the bonbon, allowing the excess chocolate to drip into the bowl. Dip the bottom of the bonbon in the cookie crumbs and set on the baking sheet. Sprinkle salt on top. Let stand for 10 seconds, then transfer the bonbon to the baking sheet in the freezer. Repeat to form the remaining bonbons; dip the ice cream scoop in the ice water between scoops. Freeze the bonbons until firm, 30 minutes, then serve.

  • "Beat eggs well. Blend in the milk, peanut butter, sugar and salt and pour into freezer tray. Freeze until almost hard then pour into a bowl and beat until smooth. Return to freezer tray or molds and freeze until firm. Makes 4 to 6 servings *Try this with a hot fudge sauce and topped with peanuts. Chocolate bon bon Ice cream or other favorite flavor hard chocolate topping: Make sure the ice cream is hard frozen. Melt 12 oz of semi-sweet chocolate pieces and 1/2 cup margarine in the top part of a double boiler. Remove from heat but keep warm over hot water. Use a fork to dip ice cream balls into the chocolate, working as fast as possible. When youve dipped about 10 - 12 pieces, place then in the freezer and continue the dipping. After the chocolate is firm, you can wrap with foil or plastic wrap. For a variation with vanilla ice cream, add 1 Tab instant coffee to the melted chocolate. I have in a hurry, bought icecream at the market and with a melon spoon dipped the ice cream out into small balls, frozen them hard and then dipped in the chocolate as above. A quick delicious treat when you want that something extra but dont have the time to spend making it or if you have the time, after the first dipping and letting the chocolate freeze hard, dip a second time.
