Ingredients

1/3 cup neutral oil, like canola or grape seed
1 medium onion, minced, about 1/2 cup
Pinch salt
1/4 teaspoon sugar
1 cup sour cream

Steps:

Place oil in an 8-inch skillet, and turn heat to medium-high. When it's hot, a minute or two later, add onion, salt and sugar. Cook, shaking pan occasionally, until onion browns, about 10 minutes.
Pour onion and oil into a fine strainer; reserve oil in refrigerator for another use. Stir onion into sour cream. If time allows, cover and refrigerate for 24 hours. Serve with potato chips or raw vegetables.

1 teaspoon canola oil
2 cups finely chopped sweet yellow onion (about 1 onion)
1 tablespoon minced fresh garlic
¼ teaspoon salt, divided
1 cup reduced-fat sour cream
½ cup canola mayonnaise
2 tablespoons minced fresh chives, divided
¼ teaspoon ground white pepper

Steps:

Heat a small skillet over medium-high heat. Add oil to pan; swirl to coat. Add onion, garlic, and 1/8 teaspoon salt; cook 4 minutes, stirring frequently. Reduce heat to medium-low; cook 6 minutes, stirring frequently. Cool onion mixture slightly.
Combine sour cream, mayonnaise, 1 1/2 tablespoons chives, pepper, and remaining 1/8 teaspoon salt in a large bowl. Add onion mixture; stir well. Top with remaining 1 1/2 teaspoons chives.

I got this recipe from my husband's Aunt Dee. It's simply labeled as "Rye Boat Dip", but judging from the ingredients, I'd say this is sour cream and onion dip! I had a hard time finding other recipes to back up my guess, so I thought I'd post this as an example. If you're unfamiliar with dried beef, it'll be in the same section as Spam and other canned meats. The stuff I use comes in a glass jar. It's a little pricey in some stores-I've used only one jar and it's been delicious. Note: Cooking time is chilling time.
