Delicious and easy drop sugar cookie!

½ cup shortening
1 cup white sugar
1 egg
¾ cup buttermilk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 cups all-purpose flour
½ teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon salt

Steps:

  • Cream together the shortening and the sugar. Stir in the egg, buttermilk and vanilla.
  • Combine the flour, baking soda and salt. Add the flour mixture to the creamed mixture and stir to combine. Chill dough in the refrigerator for 1 hour. Drop mixture by rounded teaspoons 2 inches apart on a lightly greased baking sheet. If desired sprinkle tops of cookies with white sugar before baking.
  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (205 degrees C).
  • Bake at 400 degrees F (205 degrees C) for 7 to 9 minutes or until set.

Buttermilk gives these sugar cookies a tart, irresistible flavor.

Yield Makes about 6 dozen

Number Of Ingredients 11

2 cups sugar
2 cups shortening
4 eggs, beaten
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
2 cups buttermilk
6 cups all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon baking powder
2 teaspoons baking soda
½ teaspoon salt
1 16-oz. container butter cream frosting
Optional: colored sugar or sprinkles

Steps:

  • Blend together sugar, shortening and eggs. Add vanilla and buttermilk.
  • In a separate bowl, combine flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt; stir into sugar mixture. Add more flour as needed to make a firm dough.
  • Chill for 2 to 3 hours or overnight.
  • On a floured surface, roll out dough to a 1/4-inch thickness. Cut out with cookie cutters; place on greased baking sheets.
  • Bake at 350 degrees for 7 to 8 minutes. Let cool. Frost and decorate as desired.
