My Favorite Butter Cream Frosting Recipes | Just A Pinch ... image

These are three of my favorite butter cream frosting recipes. All three of these recipes are tried and true. The first recipe is for a Wilton Butter Cream icing using both shortening and butter. The second recipe is a recipe I have used for many, many years, right off of the Domino Confectioners Sugar box, and lastly a recipe taken from a Wilton Cake Decorating Class I took a few years back.

1/2 cup(s) solid vegetable shortening
1/2 cup(s) butter or margarine
1 1/2 teaspoon(s) vanilla
5 cup(s) sifted confectioner's sugar (there are 4 cups in a pound)
3 tablespoon(s) milk
DOMINO'S SUGAR BUTTER CREAM FROSTING
1 pound(s) pkg. domino confectioners sugar
1/2 cup(s) butter
3-4 tablespoon(s) milk
1 teaspoon(s) vanilla
WILTON PROFESSIONAL BUTTERCREAM ICING
1 cup(s) solid white vegetable shortening
1 teaspoon(s) wilton flavor (vanilla, almond or butter)
2 tablespoon(s) milk or water
1 pound(s) pure cane confectioners sugar (approximately 4 cups)
1 tablespoon(s) wilton meringue powder
1 pinch(es) salt (optional)

Steps:

  • Wilton Buttercream icing: In a large mixing bowl: cream butter and shortening with electric mixer.
  • Add vanilla. Gradually add sugar, one cup at a time, beating well on medium speed.
  • Scrape sides and bottom of bowl often. When all the sugar has been mixed in, icing will appear dry. Add milk and beat at high speed until light and fluffy.
  • Keep icing covered with a damp cloth until you are ready to decorate.
  • Domino Sugar Butter Cream Frosting: Combine in a large bowl, with mixer at low speed, confectioner's sugar, butter, milk and vanilla.
  • Beat at medium speed 1-2 minutes until creamy. If desired, add more milk until frosting is spreading consistency. Makes enough to fill and frost 2-layer cake, 13x9x2-inch sheet cake or 24 cupcakes.
  • Professional Butter Cream Frosting: Cream shortening, flavoring and water. Add dry ingredients and mix on medium speed until all ingredients have been thoroughly mixed together.
  • Blend an additional minute or so, until creamy. Chocolate Buttercream Variation: Add 3/4 cup cocoa or three 1 oz. unsweetened chocolate squares, melted and additional 1 to 2 tablespoons water to recipe. Mix until well blended.

This is the crust recipe I usually use to make most of my pies.I have had the recipe for years from my sister. It is easy. It is made using a food processor. It is flaky and so buttery. I love it. Hope you all do too.

Number Of Ingredients 4

2 1/2 cup(s) all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon(s) salt
2 stick(s) butter, or 1 cup chilled well
1/2 cup(s) ice water with ice in it

Steps:

  • Makes a double crust: Get a measuring cup fill with ice. Add cold water. Set cup aside.
  • Cut sticks of butter in half length wise. Turn over and cut in half again. You will have four pieces. Cut again width wise several times. You will have a little cubes of butter.
  • In a bowl Whisk the flour and salt together. Place mixture in a food processor.
  • Add butter to flour and pulse or blend until Butter is well incorporated. It should look like course crumbs.
  • Add 2 TB ice water to flour butter mixture. Pulse well. Add more water as needed by 1 tablespoon at a time. You will not be using all of the water. You will be using just enough to make the crust form a ball. (Do not add ice from water)
  • Turn food processor back on and pulse until it looks like it is beginning to form a ball. Remove from processor. The dough should easily form in to a pliable dough.
  • Divide dough in half,and flatten in to 2 disc's. Wrap well with plastic wrap. Place disc's in refrigerator for at least 3-4 hours. You may make the night before using. You may also freeze until ready to use. Roll dough out on floured surface until 11 inch circle is formed. Place in pie pan,and trim edges. Repeat for a top crust if needed. Makes enough for 1 bottom and 1 top, or 2 shells.
  • Note: before filling Crust. Beat an egg white. Brush bottom crust with egg white. This will prevent crust from getting soggy.
