**Malabar Spinach Dal | Bachala Aaku Pappu | Healthy Recipe** - All that the Telugus need to have a satisfying meal is Dal and fragrant Ghee with hot rice. That is why Dal is a must on the everyday menu. They are also in the practice of making Dal with all leafy greens and this Dal with Malabar Spinach is one such recipe. Telugu meals start with a pickle or Chutney, then Dal, then curry, followed by a Fry. And Dal is a must item on the menu. Dal recipes are aplenty but the one I share has a wonderful, savoury taste. Malabar Spinach Dal is usually made with Red Gram or Green Gram but I make it a little differently. This Dal is ultra tasty when eaten with Hot Rice, Ghee, a pickle or an Omelette to accompany it.

Soaked Red Gram
Soaked Green Gram
Soaked Bengal Gram
Turmeric
Green Chillies
Bunches Malabar Spinach leaves chopped
Tamarind Juice
Water
Salt
For Seasoning
Oil
Mustrd Seeds
Bengal Gram
Black Gram
Cumin Seeds
Red Chillies
Asafoetida – 2 pinches
Sprig Curry Leaves
Tomato Pieces

Steps:

  • Add the soaked Red gram, Green Gram, Bengal Gram, Turmeric, Green Chillies, chopped Malabar Spinach leaves and Water and cook on a medium flame till three whistles.
  • Smash the Dal once the steam is out. Add Salt and Tamarind Juice to the Dal and cook for a while and remove from the stove.
  • Heat Oil and add the ingredients for Seasoning and roast well.
  • Add the Tomato Pieces at the end and cook until they turn soft, Then mix in the Dal.

500 grams Licious Freshwater prawns
1 teaspoon turmeric powder
1 teaspoon ½red chilli powder
Salt (to taste)
1 tablespoon coconut oil or coconut paste (cream)
1/2 cup coconut paste or grated coconut
1 tbsp methi seeds
1 teaspoon coriander leaves
2 tbsp coconut oil
5-6 onions
5-6 tbsp ginger garlic paste
2 red chilli
1 teaspoon mustard seeds
1 cup coconut milk
7-8 leaves curry
1 1/2 teaspoon tamarind juice
1 teaspoon jaggery powder

Steps:

  • Start by marinating the prawns and keep aside for 15 minutes.
  • In a pan roast coconut,methi and coriander seeds. Add this to the marinated prawns and keep aside.
  • Add coconut oil, onions, ginger garlic paste, mustard seeds and green chillies to a shallow pan.
  • Heat till it sputters.
  • Add coconut milk, salt and curry leaves and mix thoroughly.
  • Then add and simmer tomato, tamarind juice and jaggery.
  • Lastly add prawns and let it simmer for another 5-7 mins
