2 pounds ground beef
2 medium onions, chopped
2 to 3 garlic cloves, minced
2 cups ketchup
1 cup barbecue sauce
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 cup cider vinegar
2 tablespoons prepared mustard
1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
1 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon pepper
12 hamburger buns, split

Steps:

  • In a large skillet, cook beef, onions and garlic over medium heat until the meat is no longer pink, breaking meat into crumbles; drain. Stir in ketchup, barbecue sauce, brown sugar, vinegar, mustard, Italian seasoning, onion powder and pepper. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer, uncovered, for 20 minutes. Serve on buns., Freeze option: Freeze cooled meat mixture in freezer containers. To use, partially thaw in refrigerator overnight. Heat through in a saucepan, stirring occasionally; add water if necessary.

extra-virgin olive oil

bell pepper, chopped

onion, chopped

cloves garlic, minced

1 tbsp.

tomato paste

1 lb.

ground beef

1 tbsp.

Worcestershire sauce

1 c.

tomato sauce

1/2 c.

ketchup

1 tbsp.

brown sugar

1 tbsp.

apple cider vinegar

Kosher salt

Freshly ground black pepper

thinly sliced red onion (optional)

Pickle chips, for serving (optional) 

Steps:

  • In a large skillet over medium heat, heat oil. Add bell pepper and onion and cook until soft, 5 minutes Stir in garlic and tomato paste and cook until fragrant, about 1 minute more. Add ground beef and cook until no longer pink, about 6 minutes then add Worcestershire sauce, tomato sauce, ketchup, brown sugar and apple cider vinegar. Season with salt and pepper and simmer until mixture has thickened, about 15 minutes. Serve on hamburger buns with onions and pickles, if desired.
