All-American Hamburgers Recipe: How to Make It image

We do a lot of camping and outdoor cooking. This all-American, homemade hamburger recipe is on our menu more than any other food. —Diane Hixon, Niceville, Florida

Number Of Ingredients 9

1 pound ground beef
2 tablespoons finely chopped onion
2 tablespoons chili sauce
2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
2 teaspoons prepared mustard
4 slices American cheese or cheddar cheese, halved diagonally
2 slices Swiss cheese, halved diagonally
4 hamburger buns, split and toasted
Optional: Lettuce leaves, sliced tomato, sliced onion, cooked bacon strips, ketchup and mustard

Steps:

  • Combine first 5 ingredients, mixing lightly but thoroughly. Shape into 4 patties. Grill burgers, covered, on an oiled rack over medium direct heat until a thermometer reads 160° and juices run clear, about 6 minutes on each side., During the last minute of cooking, top each patty with 2 triangles American cheese and 1 triangle Swiss cheese. Serve on buns. As desired, top with lettuce, tomato, onion, bacon, ketchup and mustard.

1-1/3 pounds ground beef
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
4 hamburger buns, split and toasted
Optional toppings: Lettuce leaves, sliced tomato, sliced onion, bacon and mayonnaise

Steps:

  • Shape ground beef into four 3/4-in.-thick patties. Just before grilling, sprinkle with salt and pepper. Grill burgers, covered, over medium heat until a thermometer reads 160°, 5-7 minutes on each side. Top bun bottoms with burgers. If desired, serve with lettuce, tomato, onion, bacon and mayonnaise., Pan-Fried Burgers: In a large skillet, heat 

    1 Tbsp. butter or oil over medium heat. Add burgers; cook until a thermometer reads 160°, 6-8 minutes on each side. 

    Oven-Baked Burgers: Place beef patties on a 
    lightly greased baking sheet. Bake them at 350° 
    until thermometer reads 160°, 15-20 minutes, turning once. 

    Air-Fried Burgers: Place burgers in a single layer on tray in air-fryer basket. Air-fry at 350° until a thermometer reads 160°, 8-10 minutes, turning halfway through cooking.

  • In a large bowl combine beef, garlic, and soy sauce. Shape into 4 patties and flatten into a 4” circle. Season both sides with salt and pepper.  Place 2 patties in air fryer and cook at 375° for 4 minutes per side, for medium. Remove and immediately top with a slice of cheese. Repeat with remaining 2 patties.  Spread hamburger buns with mayo, then top with lettuce, patties, tomatoes, and onions.

IRON SKILLET HAMBURGERS RECIPE - FOOD.COM
I found this recipe in the newspaper and have tweaked it over the years. The salt, heated to a high temp. in a black skillet, keeps the meat from sticking, but does not permeate the meat. I find that covering the heated dish with foil, after the butter and spices have been added, keeps the meat warm while the pan juices have time to permeate the hamburgers patties. The burgers are so tasty, the only thing I add to the buttered buns and meat are a few hamburger dills.

  • Heat a 4-quart sauce pot over medium high heat. Add olive oil and onions, sauté until translucent, about 8 minutes. Add garlic and sauté until fragrant, about 2 minutes. Add tomatoes, tomato paste, sugar, molasses and cider vinegar. Bring to a slow boil, lower to a simmer and using a spoon crush the whole tomatoes. Add remaining ingredients and continue to simmer, uncovered for 45–55 minutes, stirring occasionally, until very thick. Make sure to keep an eye on it and stir it to keep it from scorching. Use an immersion blender to puree the ketchup. If you don't have an immersion blender, transfer it carefully to a blender or food processor and process until smooth. (Optional: Strain through a fine mesh strainer.) Chill in refrigerator for at least 2 hours. The ketchup will continue to develop flavor and thicken. Enjoy on everything! Notes:1. Keep refrigerated in an airtight container up to a month.2.
