Best Pigs in a Blanket Recipe - How to Make Pigs in a Blanket image

Made with just two main ingredients, pigs in a blanket are impossible to resist! Wrapped in buttery pastry, these bite-size sausage snacks are a party hit.

1 8-ounce can refrigerated crescent roll dough
1 14-ounce package cocktail-sized smoked sausages, patted dry
1 large egg 
everything bagel seasoning (optional)
3/4 c. mayonnaise
1/4 c. chile-garlic sauce or Sriracha
3/4 c. Dijon mustard
1/4 c. genuine maple syrup 
3/4 c. sour cream
1/4 c. pickle juice (from jar)
1 tbsp. fresh chives, chopped

Steps:

  • Preheat the oven to 375°. Working quickly while cold, unroll the crescent dough sheet on a lightly floured surface and separate the perforated dough into 8 triangles. Cut each dough triangle into three equal skinny triangles.
  • Place one cocktail sausage on the wide base of one skinny triangle. Roll the sausage toward the pointed end of the triangle, allowing the dough to overlap and wrap around the sausage. Place the rolled sausage on a parchment-lined baking sheet, point-side down. Repeat with the remaining dough triangles and sausages.
  • Whisk together the egg with 1 teaspoon water in a small bowl until smooth. Brush the egg wash over the dough and sprinkle with the everything bagel seasoning, if desired. Bake at 375° until the dough is puffed and golden brown, 12 to 15 minutes.
  • Make the dipping sauces (optional): For the Spicy Mayo Dipping Sauce, stir together the mayo and chile-garlic sauce in a small bowl until smooth. For the Maple-Dijon Dijon Dipping Sauce, stir together the mustard and syrup in a small bowl until smooth. For the Quick Ranch, stir together the sour cream, pickle juice, and chives in a small bowl until smooth.
  • Serve the pigs in a blanket warm with Spicy Mayo, Maple Dijon, or Quick Ranch Dipping Sauces.

Jason Goldstein of Chop Happy created this recipe as an homage to his childhood memories of going to the bagel store with his dad in New York City. It's a fun and easy appetizer for any party and can even be made a day beforehand (just refrigerate the pan of assembled pigs in blankets and pop them in the oven 30 minutes before party time).

1 puff pastry sheet
8 ounce cream cheese
5 scallions, chopped
salt and pepper to taste
1 tablespoon lemon juice (optional)
5 hot dogs
1 egg, whisked
1 tablespoon sesame seeds
1 tablespoon poppy seeds
1 tablespoon garlic powder
1 tablespoon dried onion flakes

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
  • Combine the cream cheese, scallions, 1 tsp of salt, 1 tsp pepper, and lemon juice.
  • Mix well with a spoon or fork.
  • Roll out the puff pastry sheet into a large rectangle.
  • Place one hot dog on the upper left corner of the puff pastry.
  • Using the hot dog as a guide, cut a square out of the pastry that will fit around the hot dog.
  • Watch the video above for guidance.
  • Remove the hot dog to spread a generous amount of the cream cheese mixture over the small pastry square.
  • Place the hot dog back on the square and wrap the pastry around the hot dog (like a blanket!), using the cream cheese as "glue" to hold it together.
  • Cut the puff pastry wrapped hot dog into inch-long pieces and place on a sheet pan lined with parchment paper, seam-side down.
  • Repeat with the rest of the puff pastry.
  • Brush the top of each "pig in a blanket" with egg wash.
  • Combine the seasonings (or use a store-bought everything bagel seasoning blend) and sprinkle generously over each piece.
  • Bake for 20 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown and your kitchen begins to smell like everything bagels.
