10 cups all-purpose apples, peeled, cored and sliced
1 cup white sugar
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
½ cup water
1 cup quick-cooking oats
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup packed brown sugar
¼ teaspoon baking powder
¼ teaspoon baking soda
½ cup butter, melted

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degree C).
  • Place the sliced apples in a 9x13 inch pan. Mix the white sugar, 1 tablespoon flour and ground cinnamon together, and sprinkle over apples. Pour water evenly over all.
  • Combine the oats, 1 cup flour, brown sugar, baking powder, baking soda and melted butter together. Crumble evenly over the apple mixture.
  • Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for about 45 minutes.

I adapted this from a 50-year-old peach crisp recipe. Although it works well with peaches, it works even better with fresh, crisp cooking apples.

Number Of Ingredients 6

2?½ cups apples - peeled, cored, and sliced
1 cup sifted all-purpose flour
1 cup white sugar
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
¼ teaspoon salt
½ cup butter, softened

Steps:

  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Lightly grease an 8-inch square baking dish.
  • Arrange apple slices evenly in prepared baking dish. Sift flour, sugar, cinnamon, and salt in a bowl. Cut in butter using a pastry blender or 2 knives until mixture resembles coarse cornmeal; sprinkle over apples.
  • Bake in preheated oven until topping is golden, 40 to 45 minutes. Cool slightly before serving.

In a large bowl, toss apples with lemon juice. Add sugar mixture; toss to coat. Add filling; dot with butter. , Roll remaining dough to a 1/8-in.-thick circle. Place over filling. Trim, seal and flute edge. Cut slits in top. Beat egg white until foamy; brush over crust. If desired, sprinkle with turbinado sugar and ground cinnamon. Cover edge loosely with foil. , Bake 25 minutes. Remove foil; bake until crust is golden brown and filling is bubbly, 20-25 minutes longer. Cool on a wire rack. If desired, serve with ice cream and caramel sauce.
