Hot Buttered Apple Cider Recipe

Yield 12 Servings

Number Of Ingredients 7

3 cups Calvados (apple brandy)
7 tablespoons (packed) golden brown sugar
6 tablespoons (3/4 stick) butter
12 cups apple cider or unfiltered apple juice
3/4 cup fresh lemon juice
12 cinnamon sticks
Whole nutmeg

Steps:

  • Bring Calvados, brown sugar, and butter to simmer in large pot over medium heat, stirring until sugar dissolves and butter melts. Add apple cider, lemon juice, and cinnamon sticks; bring to boil. DO AHEAD Can be made 1 day ahead. Cover and refrigerate. Rewarm before serving.
  • Ladle cider mixture into 12 cups. Add 1 cinnamon stick from pot to each. Grate nutmeg over and serve.

3 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
Pinch of ground ginger
1 quart unpasteurized apple cider
4 ounces apple brandy, such as Lairds Applejack

Steps:

  • In a small bowl, mash the butter with the cinnamon and ginger.
  • Heat the apple cider in a medium saucepan over medium heat until hot but not boiling, about 4 minutes. Pour the hot cider into 4 mugs. Add 1 ounce of apple brandy to each mug and top with a dollop of the spiced butter.
