What could be sweeter than baking the cutest heart shaped cookies for your special valentine? We choose to make a cream cheese frosting for the cookies to make them extra special. And feel free to dye the frosting any colors you wish or use any sprinkles your heart desires! Perfectly customizable making them the perfect gift-able treat.

3 c.

all-purpose flour, plus more for surface

1 tsp.

baking powder

1/2 tsp.

kosher salt

1 c.

(2 sticks) butter, softened

1 c.

granulated sugar

1

large egg

1 tsp.

pure vanilla extract

1 tbsp.

milk

1

(8-oz.) block cream cheese, softened

1/2 c.

(1 stick) butter, softened

4 c.

powdered sugar

1 tsp.

pure vanilla extract

1/4 tsp.

kosher salt

Pink and red food coloring

Sprinkles

Steps:

  • In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. In another large bowl using a hand mixer, beat butter and sugar until fluffy and pale in color. Add egg, milk, and vanilla and beat until combined, then add flour mixture gradually until totally combined.  Shape into a disk and wrap in plastic. Refrigerate 1 hour. When ready to roll, preheat oven to 350º and line two baking sheets with parchment paper. Lightly flour a clean work surface and roll out dough until 1/8” thick. Using a heart shaped cookie cutter, cut out cookies and transfer to prepared baking sheets.  Bake until edges are lightly golden, 8 to 10 minutes.  Make frosting: In a large bow using a hand mixer, beat cream cheese and butter together until smooth. Add powdered sugar, vanilla, and salt and beat until combined.  Divide frosting into 3 bowls. Add pink food coloring to one bowl and red food coloring to another. Stir each bowl and add more food coloring until desired color is reached. Frost cookies using an offset spatula with each color of frosting, then top with sprinkles.

(2 sticks) unsalted butter, at room temp

3/4 c.

sugar

large egg

1 1/2 tsp.

pure vanilla extract

Royal icing

Luster dust and vodka, for decorating

Steps:

  • In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. In another large bowl, using an electric mixer, beat butter and sugar until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes. Beat in egg and then vanilla. Reduce mixer speed to low and gradually add flour mixture, mixing just until incorporated. Shape dough into 2 disks and roll each between 2 sheets of waxed paper to 1/8 inch thick. Chill until firm, 30 minutes in refrigerator or 15 minutes in freezer. Heat oven to 350°F. Line baking sheets with parchment paper. Using floured cookie cutters, cut out cookies. Place on prepared sheets. Reroll, chill and cut scraps. Bake, rotating positions of baking sheets halfway through, until cookies are light golden brown around edges, 10 to 12 minutes. Let cool on sheets 5 minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely. Ice cookies with royal icing and let set. When ready to decorate, combine luster dust with a touch of vodka and use a paint brush to “paint” on stripes.
