Hawaiian Dinner Rolls Recipe: How to Make It image

Pineapple and coconut give a subtle sweetness to these golden homemade rolls. If there are any leftovers, they're great for sandwiches. —Kathy Kurtz, Glendora, California

Yield 15 rolls.

Number Of Ingredients 11

1 can (8 ounces) crushed pineapple, undrained
1/4 cup warm pineapple juice (70° to 80°)
1/4 cup water (70° to 80°)
1 large egg, room temperature
1/4 cup butter, cubed
1/4 cup nonfat dry milk powder
1 tablespoon sugar
1-1/2 teaspoons salt
3-1/4 cups bread flour
2-1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
3/4 cup sweetened shredded coconut

Steps:

  • In bread machine pan, place the first 10 ingredients in order suggested by manufacturer. Select dough setting (check dough after 5 minutes of mixing; add 1-2 tablespoons of water or flour if needed). Just before final kneading (your machine may audibly signal this), add coconut., When cycle is complete, turn dough onto a lightly floured surface. Cover and let rest for 10 minutes. Divide into 15 portions; roll each into a ball. Place in a greased 13x9-in. baking pan. , Cover and let rise in a warm place for 45 minutes or until doubled. Bake at 375° for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.

1 loaf (1 pound) Hawaiian sweet bread
1 block (8 ounces) Swiss cheese
3 slices red onion, chopped
1/2 cup butter, melted
3 garlic cloves, minced
1 teaspoon salt

Steps:

  • Cut bread diagonally into 1-in. slices to within 1 in. of bottom. Repeat cuts in opposite direction. Cut Swiss cheese into 1/4-in. slices; cut slices into small pieces. Insert into bread. Combine the onion, butter, garlic and salt; spoon over bread. , Wrap loaf in foil. Bake at 350° for 25-30 minutes or until cheese is melted. Serve warm.

  • Make caramelized onions: In a large skillet over medium, heat oil. Add onions and season with salt. Reduce heat to medium-low and cook, stirring occasionally until onions are caramelized and jammy, about 25 minutes. Let cool slightly.  Preheat oven to 350°. Make poppy butter topping: In a medium bowl, combine butter, poppy seeds, garlic, and Worcestershire. Make sliders: Split slider buns in half horizontally and place bottom halves on baking sheet. Spread mayo in an even layer on bottom layer of slider buns, then top with half the ham. Top with Swiss, then remaining ham. Spread ham with honey mustard and onions and close sandwiches. Brush poppyseed dressing on tops of buns until all buns are coated.  Bake until cheese is melty and buns are golden, 10 to 12 minutes.
