Before going into a description of this recipe, I want to thank Chef #192264 for inspiring me with her Recipe #163278 recipe. If it wasn't for her, I would never be able to make dumplings.Now to go on with my description for this recipe.Sometimes you just want some other type of meat besides chicken with dumplings, so I came up with this. You could make the dumplings the drop type,but I suggest rolling the dough out. It makes for a more evenly cooked finished dumpling. If you try this I sure hope you enjoy it. :) Submitted to "ZAAR" on December 23, 2008.

Number Of Ingredients 10

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 cup shortening
1/2 cup milk
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 lb ground beef
3/4 cup of finely chopped white onion
1/2 teaspoon seasoning salt
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
6 cups beef broth
1 1/2 cups leftover mixed vegetables, like corn, peas, carrots, and lima beans

Steps:

  • Mix together flour,salt and shortening in a large bowl until small crumbs are formed.
  • Add milk until well blended.
  • Roll out dough on a floured cutting board or floured counter until about 1/8 inch thick.
  • Let "dry" for about 30 minutes.
  • While the dumpling dough is "drying", take a large pot and add remaining ingredients except for the beef broth and veggies.
  • Cut dough into even sized squares.
  • Cook ground beef until browned and onions are tender, drain if needed.
  • Return beef to pan and add beef broth and veggies.
  • Bring broth to a boil, and add dumplings a few at a time so the broth can continue to boil.
  • Simmer for 30 minutes.
  • Then eat and enjoy :).

100 grams turkey breasts
150 grams Ground beef
50 grams Frozen pea
1 stalk Celery
1 bunch parsley
0.5 bunch Basil (sliced)
50 grams Parmesan
300 grams short grain rice
2 tablespoons Tomato paste
200 milliliters Beef broth
2 eggs
3 tablespoons butter
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 onion
4 tablespoons finely ground breadcrumbs
2 tablespoons Pastry flour
1 small can Saffron
salt
freshly ground peppers
vegetable oil (for frying)

Steps:

  • Peel the onion and finely chop with 1/2 bunch parsley. Rinse the celery and chop the turkey breast. Heat 2 tablespoons olive oil and 1 tablespoon butter in a saucepan sauté onions, add turkey and ground beef and brown. Mix in the parsley and celery. Season with salt and pepper, mix in tomato paste and pour in broth. Add the peas, cover and simmer over low heat.
  • Bring a pot of 1/2 liter (approximately 2 cups) salted water to boil, sprinkle in the rice and cook over low heat, stirring frequently. Dissolve the saffron in 2 tablespoons hot water and mix with the parmesan into the rice, let cool slightly and then stir in 2 tablespoons butter and 1 egg. Bring the meat sauce to a boil and stir in remaining parsley and basil. Whisk 1 egg whisk in a deep dish and lightly season wtih salt and pepper. Shape the cooled rice into about 10 tangerine-sized balls. Insert your finger into the center to make a well, fill with 1 tablespoon of meat mixture and seal opening with rice. Roll the dumplings in flour, dip in egg and then in ground breadcrumbs. Saute in hot oil about 5- 8 minutes, until golden brown. Drain on paper towels and serve.

I seem to be the only one in my family as a child that did not like dumplings lol I have yet to try them, and I probably won't ever try them :) But that doesn't mean YOU shouldn't try them lol Apparently, they are really good with this stew. I did happen to love the stew and sopped up all the juices with bread. I was also a kid so mine was always topped with ketchup! Not much has changed lol

  • This is a THIN stew so you need something to sop up the juices. Make small to medium size Bisquick dumplings and plop on top of stew about 15 mins before you eat. Make sure you have enough liquid in the stew, because dumplings will absorb moisture. You turn back the temp so that the dumplings basically steam. Cover for 15 mins and serve. Crusty bread works too :)
