Number Of Ingredients 10

1-1/2 pounds ground beef
1 can (8 ounces) tomato sauce
3 slices process cheese (Velveeta)
1/4 cup chopped onion
2 beef bouillon cubes
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1 loaf (1 pound) French bread or Italian bread
Additional process cheese (Velveeta) slices, optional
1 medium green pepper, thinly sliced
1 medium tomato, thinly sliced

Steps:

  • In a skillet, cook beef over medium heat until no longer pink; drain. Stir in tomato sauce, cheese, onion, bouillon and garlic powder. Cover and simmer for 10 minutes or until bouillon is dissolved and cheese is melted. Cut the bread in half widthwise and lengthwise. Carefully hollow out top and bottom of loaf, leaving a 1/2-in. shell (discard removed bread or save for another use). Spoon meat mixture into bottom halves of bread. Top with additional cheese if desired, green pepper and tomato. Replace bread tops. Wrap in heavy-duty foil. Bake at 400° for 15-20 minutes or until heated through. Slice and serve warm.

When my children were teenagers, you never knew how many were going to be coming over for dinner. I came up with this hoagie recipe when I needed to feed a lot of hungry teens in a hurry. They are all grown and gone now and since it's just my husband and me, I've scaled down the size of this recipe so that there's just enough for the two of us and maybe a few drop-ins when we have them. Just serve with chips or salad and you're good to go! This recipe is so easy to adjust to your family's tastes and is a super simple, very tasty meal and I hope that y'all enjoy!

1 pound(s) ground beef
1 to 1 1/2 cup(s) fresh, sliced mushrooms (you may also used canned)
1 small onion, quartered and sliced
1 teaspoon(s) onion powder
- salt and pepper to taste
1 package(s) mushroom gravy mix, prepared according to package directions
1 cup(s) mozzarella cheese, shredded
- hoagie rolls
- additional shredded mozzarella cheese or any other hard cheese that you prefer
SPECIAL NOTE: YOU MAY NEED TO ADJUST THE AMOUNT OF WATER TO MAKE THE PACKAGE GRAVY MIX. I'VE NOTICED THAT TODAY'S GRAVY MIXES SEEM TO BE A BIT MORE WATERY AND DON'T THICKEN UP LIKE THEY USED TO.

Steps:

  • Wash and slice mushrooms; peel, quarter and slice onion and set aside. In large skillet, heat 3 to 4 tablespoons olive oil. When hot, add mushrooms, onions and ground beef. Add seasonings and cook until ground beef is browned, onions are transparent and mushrooms are cooked. Drain and blot with paper towels to remove as much excess grease as possible, return to pan and set aside.
  • Prepare mushroom gravy mix according to package directions. When done, pour into ground beef mixture and add mozzarella cheese. Continue to heat until cheese melts and mixture is thoroughly heated.
  • Slice hoagie rolls and spoon mixture into rolls. Add additional cheese, if desired and serve with chips, fries, salads or any other sides you like.
  • This recipe is very easily tweeked to your family's likings. You may also add in extras such as green peppers or spice it up with jalapeno peppers. You can also adjust the seasonings. This recipe is very easily doubled or even trippled to serve a lot of people. I sincerely hope that y'all enjoy!
