1 pound lean ground beef
1/2 pound bulk mild or hot Italian sausage
2 tablespoons Progresso™ Italian-style bread crumbs
6 slices (3/4 ounce each) mozzarella cheese
12 slices Italian bread, 1/2 inch thick
1/2 cup sun-dried tomato mayonnaise
1 cup shredded lettuce
1 medium tomato, thinly sliced

Steps:

  • Heat coals or gas grill for direct heat. Mix beef, sausage and bread crumbs in large bowl. Shape mixture into 6 patties, about 1/2 inch thick and 3 1/2 inches in diameter.
  • Cover and grill patties 4 to 6 inches from medium heat 12 to 15 minutes, turning once, until meat thermometer inserted in center reads 160°. Top patties with cheese. Cover and grill about 1 minute longer or until cheese is melted. Add bread slices to side of grill for last 2 to 3 minutes of grilling, turning once, until lightly toasted.
  • Spread toasted bread with mayonnaise; top 6 bread slices with lettuce, tomato and patties. Top with remaining bread slices.

You know those days when you can’t decide if you want to grill sausage or burgers? Problem solved.

Yield 4 Servings

Number Of Ingredients 8

1½ pounds loose pork sausage
4 Kaiser rolls or burger buns, split and toasted
2 tablespoons olive oil
3 bell peppers, assorted colors, seeded and cut into ½” strips (about 1½ lbs.)
1 medium yellow onion, sliced ½” thick
2 tablespoons sherry or red wine vinegar
2 tablespoons honey
Kosher salt, freshly ground pepper

Steps:

  • Prepare grill for medium heat. Form sausage into 4½”-thick patties. Grill patties, moving and flipping as necessary, until completely cooked through, about 5 minutes per side.
  • Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add peppers and onions and cook, stirring often, until wilted and soft, 8–10 minutes. Add vinegar and honey, and cook, stirring, until slightly thickened, about 2 minutes; season with salt and pepper.
  • Serve patties on grilled buns, topped with peppers and onions.

This recipe was included in an ad in my local paper. It sounded so good that we had to try it. We used Owens rolled sausage since I had the coupon. It was great, but I'm sure other sausage brands would work too! The recipe originally said to make 8 patties, but they ended up so small that I decided next time I will make 6 larger patties. Doubled the recipe and made 12 patties. They came out just the right size. Huge hit with all the guests! Many tried to guess the "secret ingredient" and were amazed when I told them it was breakfast sausage mixed with the beef.

  • Preheat a grill to medium. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the bell peppers and onion and season with a pinch each of salt and pepper. Cook, stirring frequently, until lightly browned and just tender, 8 to 10 minutes. Add the garlic and cook until just softened, about 1 more minute. Stir in the pizza sauce and ½ cup water and simmer until thickened but still saucy, about 5 minutes. Set aside and keep warm. Combine the beef, sausage, sage, oregano and 1 teaspoon each salt and pepper in a large bowl. Mix with your hands until well combined. Form into six 1-inch-thick patties (about 4½ inches wide). Season the patties with salt and pepper. Grill the burgers until cooked through, 6 to 7 minutes per side; top each with a slice of cheese during the last 1 to 2 minutes and cover to melt. Serve the burgers on the rolls and top with the peppers, onion and basil.

This is an absolutely wonderful grilled Italian hamburger. You may add a little garlic powder also, and top with a thin slice of Mozzarella cheese as well. I do suggest you make the full recipe as leftovers never last more than two days at my house. These are wonderful with a big slice of very sweet onion and catsup. Some people like to add a slice of Mozzarella cheese before popping them in the foil and before heating again.
