This homemade baked macaroni and cheese recipe beats the boxed kind any day of the week.  For a divine main dish, stir in chopped cooked ham before baking, and then sprinkle top with chopped cooked bacon before serving.

Yield Makes 8 servings

Number Of Ingredients 7

1 (8-ounce) package elbow macaroni (about 2 cups uncooked macaroni)
2 cups milk
¼ cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon onion salt
2 (10-ounce) blocks sharp Cheddar cheese, shredded (about 4 1/2 cups) and divided*
1 cup soft breadcrumbs (4 slices, crusts removed)
¼ cup butter or margarine, melted

Steps:

  • Cook macaroni according to package directions; drain well. Set aside.
  • Place milk, flour, and onion salt in a quart jar; cover tightly, and shake vigorously 1 minute.
  • Stir together flour mixture, 3 1/2 cups cheese, and macaroni.
  • Pour macaroni mixture into a lightly greased 13- x 9-inch baking dish or 2 (11-inch) oval baking dishes. Sprinkle evenly with breadcrumbs and remaining 1 cup cheese; drizzle evenly with melted butter.
  • Bake at 350° for 45 minutes or until golden brown.
  • *20 ounces loaf pasteurized prepared cheese product, shredded or cut into small cubes, may be substituted. Omit breadcrumbs if using prepared cheese product.
  • Note: For testing purposes only, we used Kraft Cracker Barrel Sharp Cheddar Cheese.

Try this more rustic and comforting precursor of the Brie puff pastry. A flavorful Muenster cheese filling nestles inside a thin homemade bread crust for a surefire standout of an appetizer spread.

1 package active dry yeast
? cup warm water (110 degree F to 115 degree F)
1?¾ - 2 cup all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons cooking oil
½ teaspoon sugar
½ teaspoon salt
1 beaten egg
3 cups shredded Muenster cheese (12 ounces)
½ cup snipped fresh parsley
¼ teaspoon garlic powder
? teaspoon black pepper
1 slightly beaten egg
1 tablespoon water
1?½ teaspoons sesame seeds

Steps:

  • In a large bowl dissolve yeast in the warm water. Add 1 cup of the flour, the oil, sugar, and salt. Beat with an electric mixer on low to medium speed for 30 seconds, scraping bowl constantly. Beat on high speed for 3 minutes. Using a wooden spoon, stir in as much of the remaining flour as you can.
  • Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead in enough of the remaining all-purpose flour to make a moderately stiff dough that is smooth and elastic (6 to 8 minutes total).
  • Shape dough into a ball. Place in a lightly greased bowl, turning once to grease surface of dough. Cover; let rise in a warm place until double in size (about 1 hour).
  • Punch down dough; turn out onto a lightly floured surface; divide into two portions. Cover and let rest 10 minutes. On a lightly floured surface, roll one portion into a 13-inch circle. Place circle on a greased 12-inch round pizza pan (dough will extend past edges of pan). Combine the 1 beaten egg, cheese, parsley, garlic powder, and pepper. Spread over dough in pan. Roll remaining dough into 13-inch circle. Place over filling; trim top and bottom doughs to 1/2-inch beyond the edge of the pan; seal and flute edges. Brush top with mixture of 1 slightly beaten egg and the 1 tablespoon water. Sprinkle with sesame seeds. Bake in a 375 degree F oven for 25 to 30 minutes or until golden brown. Cut in narrow wedges. Serve hot. Makes 12 to 16 appetizer servings.
