How to Make Glycerine Extracts - Mountain Rose Herbs image

Have you been searching for an alternative to alcohol-based tinctures? Looking for a way to extract and preserve your herbs? Vegetable glycerine, the sweet principle of oils, was discovered in 1789 and came into use by herbalists around 1846. This liquid is obtained by the hydrolysis of vegetable fats or fixed oils.

Number Of Ingredients 6

dried herb
organic Vegetable Glycerine
distilled water
pantry jar
cheesecloth
bottle (for storage)

Steps:

  • Fill a mason jar ½ way with dried herb (2/3 way full with fresh herb). Chop dried herb well before mixing with menstruum.
  • In a separate jar, mix 3 parts organic Vegetable Glycerine and 1 part distilled water. Shake to combine.
  • Pour liquid mixture over the herb and completely cover to fill the jar.
  • Label container with date, ratio of glycerine to water, and herbs used.
  • Agitate daily for 4-6 weeks.
  • Strain with cheesecloth, bottle, label!

Smooth, sweet and glossy, here is a recipe for royal icing that you can use on your cakes, cupcakes and desserts.

1 1/2 cup (240g) pure icing sugar, approximately
1 egg white
1/2 teaspoon lemon juice
few drops glycerine, optional

Steps:

  • Sift the icing sugar through a very fine sieve. Lightly beat egg white in a small bowl with a wooden spoon; add icing sugar, a heaped tablespoon at a time, beating well after each addition.
  • When icing reaches the desired consistency, add juice; beat well. Cover surface of icing tightly with plastic wrap while not using to prevent crust developing. Icing will harden considerably on standing. For a slightly softer icing, add a few drops of glycerine to the icing.
