Ginger Cardamom Tea - Simple Indian Recipes image

Ginger Cardamom Tea is a traditional beverage had by people all over India. It is known by different names like Adrak Elaaychi Chai or Inji Elakkai Tea. There is no household in India that does not enjoy tea. Infact, many people cannot even start their day without a cup of Chai.

Prep Time 2 minutes

Cook Time 10 minutes

Number Of Ingredients 6

Milk - 1 cup
Tea - 1.5 tbsp
Water - 1.5 cup
Ginger - 2" piece (crushed)
Cardamom - 3 pods (crushed)
Sugar/ Honey - 3 tbsp (or to taste)

Steps:

  • Peel the ginger and crush it. For this you can use a mortar and pestle. If not you can grate the ginger too.
  • Crush the cardamom too.
  • In a saucepan, bring water to a boil along with crushed ginger and cardamon pods. (NOTE: You could also add ginger powder and cardamom powder)
  • Add the tea leaves and let it come to a rolling boil again.
  • Reduce the flame and let it simmer for 3-4 minutes for all the essence of the tea to be released in the water.
  • Add the milk to the above tea water and bring it to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for couple of mintes till you get the desired colour. Switch off
  • Strain the tea using a strainer, add enough sugar and enjoy it piping hot with biscuits.
